**hi! my name is mikki and this is my first book. i love reading, writing, and the walking dead. i think about what would occur if "the apocalypse" is ever to happen and i am very interested in it, so yeah. I know this story probably isn't very good but it's the first one so bear with me here haha. but i hope you guys like it :)

SAMMY'S POV

I walked out of the room, and told Lexie we should go find Mom. But at this point, I knew her being alive wasn't guaranteed. After what had happened to my father, anything could be possible. I couldn't help but to wonder what had actually happened and what those things were, but that didn't much matter. I just needed to be strong for my sister.

LEXIE'S POV

We walked outside, and I got the kind of feeling that made you scared yet brave. As we wiped the tears from our eyes, I felt determined to find my mother.

"So, what do you think this is?" Sammy asked me.

"I don't know. The sick people, I don't think they're actually people." I responded. I'm sticking with my guess earlier; they aren't sick, they're dead.

"Dad became one. He, like, reincarnated." Sammy said.

"What does that mean?" I asked, curiously. You don't really talk much about this topic in the fourth grade.

"You know, when someone dies," Sammy started. I winced; I didn't want to think about the fact that my father was dead.

"and they come back as something or someone else?" She finished. So, we were on the same page. "This could go on for a while."

"I think they're monsters. Almost like ghosts." I said. They come back to life, so they kind of are monsters.

"If you see one, don't go near it. If it's in your path, you kill it. No questions asked. Head shots only, okay? We'll go to the archery range and take some bows and arrows, and each time you kill one of the things, you check to see if it has any weapons. If so, we take them. We'll need all we can get." Sammy said. Her pace increased as we got closer to town.

"What about food and water?" I asked. If Sammy was right about this being how we'll live for a while, we'll need food. Lots of people will be looking for that.

"After the archery range. We can't just enter a grocery store armed with just knives and a bat. If there's people in there, they'll have guns and they'll want all they can get." Like I said before, Sammy was smart.

We made our way to downtown, and there were no cars out. We did see a man, his name was Martin, I believe, inside of his car shop watching the news.

"Come on, hide." Sammy whispered. "He might be armed."

We went to a spot where we could see Martin but he couldn't see us. The news was talking about what was going on.

"...and in the city, there's been thousands of deaths already. Scientists are calling it a disease like rabies, but many actions are unexplainable. The majority of New York City has no electricity, and Los Angeles is already out. Smaller towns around the country are completely shut down-" And just like that, the television turned off, as well as all of Martin's lights and his air conditioner.

"Crap." Martin muttered. We saw him leave our sight for a few minutes, and Sammy told me to get my bat ready as she got out her knife. Martin returned with a large bag and a rifle in his hands, and Sammy quietly pulled me back a little. We saw Martin turn in our direction, so we ducked into the bushes surrounding us. As we went down, my bat hit a branch on one of the bushes, and the noise was loud enough for Martin to hear.

Sammy quickly covered my mouth, and I jumped as I heard the gun go off. It missed me, and Sammy's hand was still on my mouth so it likely missed her too. He peered over once more, then continued on.

Sammy took her hand off my mouth and I let out a breath I didn't realize I was holding.

"Lexie! You almost got us killed!" She scolded. Sammy never scolded me, not once. But I could tell that I'd be told off a lot from now on.

"I'm sorry, I was nervous and my hand was shaking. The bat's heavy." I whispered back. I thought she'd probably do what my mom always does and tell me that "there's no excuse", but she didn't. She sighed and took the bat out of my hand and gave me her knife.

"Get used to the knife for now. When we get the rest of our stuff, you'll have to use everything so be prepared." Wow, I thought to myself. How does she know any of this?

As we were about to leave, we ourselves heard a rustle in the bushes behind us. We both froze.

   "Martin?" I whispered to Sammy.

"Thing." she responded, turning around to face it. "You want to get it? I'll do it if you aren't up for it."

I looked at the... dead person, and realized that this was gonna be my life until it was over. So, I decided to be strong and tell Sammy I could do it.

The thing was walking towards us, and I stepped forward and stabbed my knife into its shoulder.

"Head shots! Right through the eye, Lexie. Get the knife out- hurry!" Sammy yelled behind me. I did as I was told and pulled the knife, but the thing grabbed my arm. I fell backwards, but Sammy caught me before I hit the floor.

"You do it!" I cried. I couldn't, I would et myself and maybe my sister killed.

"No, I'm not always gonna be here." She pushed the thing back with the bat. "It's yours. You have to."

She was right. So, I took my knife and stabbed it right into the eye area of the thing, and it fell.

"Good. Next time, though, take the knife out as soon as it stops. You're wasting time having to get it." So I nodded, reached down, and grabbed the knife. When I came up, a single tear slipped out of my eye. But I wiped it away before Sammy could see it.

"This guy has nothing on him. No weapons. So, let's go." Sammy said. "There's a whole world out there."
