Chapter 6Uzair's Pov:
Ayla Noor Malik.....
A name I had not heard of in years.
Those sparkling grey eyes that held me captive even as a child. Her laughter echoed in the distance like a melodious tune I had kept locked in my mind. Playing on repeat when I felt like my world was being torn into two.
I was a mere stranger to her. Her lost eyes looked at me as if I was stranger crossing the street and had asked her for directions.
I was a nobody to her.
All the memories we had shared, the laughter, the endless tears meant absolutely nothing. It felt like someone had dropped a heavy boulder on my head, suddenly sending me falling helplessly deep into a hole with no plan of meeting the bottom.
Was our friendship really this meaningless? Had I been dreaming? Were all these memories in my head an imagination? A story I had conjured to keep my mind alive and to free myself from the worries of the world?
A knock on the door suddenly pulled me back into reality. My fingers were hovering over my laptop, an empty email sheet ready to be filled with meaningless words and figures.
My eyes zeroed into the number on the left hand corner- indicating how many more responses and questions had been fired back at me all in the space of .....40 minutes?!
My eyes widened at the clear glass analogue clock on the opposite side of the wall from where I was sitting. I had been staring into space for 40 minutes.
"Sir, I'm sorry to barge in but I have some important information for you."
Uzair get yourself together.
"I'm sorry Jamal but if it's the same address we traced 3 days ago I can tell you now it's not very important."
I gestured for Jamal to come in and he did. Jamal had been working for the force for 5 months now and I had to say I was very impressed at the progress he was making. He was a quick learner and was keen to get his hands dirty- even if it was only paperwork and research for the first 6 months of his training.
"No sir, I think this was meant to be sent to your business office but it was sent here with a messenger who wishes to speak to you."
My eyes moved from the laptop screen and saw Jamal carrying a large grey envelope that had a *KEEP STRAIGHT* bright red sign stamped onto the middle. Jamal placed it on my desk and looked at me, waiting to know if he should let the messenger in.
"Let him in."
He nodded and left my office. My eyes widened at the mystery messenger waltzing into the room.
"Missed me?"
Bright blue eyes stared at me with excitement, he opened his arms widely and grinned from ear to ear.
"If you expect me to run into your arms like a teenage girl then please don't bother yourself." He chuckled as I pulled him in for a hug.
"Is this the part where you kiss me now?" He winked and cupped my cheek. I playfully shoved him off and stood back to look at him.
There he stood in all his glory, his 6ft 3 frame towering over my 6ft frame. His brown straight hair was slicked back and his usual fair skin was tanned. He smiled from ear to ear, two dimples settling deep into his cheeks like craters. Apart from our smiles we looked nothing alike.
"My big brother! How are you on this fine day?" I rolled my eyes as he chuckled and settled himself into the couch on the right hand side of my desk.
Abdul Raheem Khan, my non identical twin. I was only older than him by 20 minutes but he definitely knew I had made a point of it growing up. Apart from our smile and surname we were nothing alike. He was taller, more friendlier, happier and well loved by everyone around him. He had bright eyes whereas mine were darker than the midnight sky. His hair was brown painted with the rays of the golden sun, mine dark tousled like the shadows of the night. Nobody ever believed we were twins and the only reason I was determined we were was due to our strong childhood bond.
