Seventh year. This was the start of Lily's seventh year at Hogwarts. She sighed and glanced out of the window. A lot of things had changed over the last year, in fact it had been her worst year at Hogwarts so far. She was no longer on good terms with one Severus Snape, despite how much she longed to talk to her old friend. Sadly, the old Sev didn't exist anymore.
Another thing that changed was her feelings towards the Potter tow rag. He was so infuriating and narcissistic. His hair was scruffy, his clothes were disheveled and he threw his money around like it was going out of fashion. It was only a matter of time before he came to bother her in her compartment. He did it every year, with his band of marauder cronies. Recently she had been feeling less like she wanted to blow his head up with a combustion hex.
Low and behold less than ten minutes later James Potter burst through the door like always, however, this time he seemed... different. His hair was still a mess, she doubted anything would change that, but his clothes were neat. His shirt was even tucked in.
"Hey Lily" He said giving her a small smile. Lily. She doubted she'd ever heard him call her Lily, not for years anyway.
"James" She nodded curtly.
"Can I please sit?" James asked, his voice full of a politeness Lily had never experienced from him before. She wasn't sure what made her do it, but she responded with another small nod. His smile spread as he took the seat opposite her. "How was your summer?"
"It was..." Lily trailed off. How was her summer? A disaster. That's what it was. The rift between her and Petunia was growing, she didn't know how she could fix it at this point. What made it worse is she now had no one she could confide in. Severus was no longer around for her. She could have written to one of the other girls in her dorm, alice maybe. She just didn't feel like she was close enough with any of them, she liked them well enough but she wouldn't consider them close friends. James cleared his throat, bringing Lily back to the situation at hand. "Terrible" She finished.
"Do you want to talk about it?" James asked with concern. Lily smiled slightly, a light pink blush tainting her cheeks. She had to admit he sounded sincere and genuine, both qualities she found attractive.
"You probably don't want to hear about it"
"You shouldn't bottle it up, talk to me. I won't tell anyone... Jeez I sound like Remus" James winced. A small laugh escaped Lily's mouth, she knew how much James hated being smart and sensible like his less trouble some best friend.
"My sister told me she hated me because I'm a freak. I thought maybe this summer would be different, that she'd finally accepted that I'm still me just with magic. I've thought that every year and I'm always proved wrong. The only difference this year is that I didn't have anyone to talk to about it" She confessed.
"Oh... You're still not talking to Sniv- Snape then?" James asked, looking at the compartment floor with guilt. He knew he was a part of the reason her and Snivelius were no longer friends, another part of him was pleased about this. Not because he hated Snape, but because he knew Snape was bad news. He was always going to end up hurting Lily one way or another.
"No"
"Anyway, the reason I came to see you was because I want to say sorry" James said looking back up meeting Lily's gaze.
"Sorry? What for?" She asked bewildered. James Potter was apologising, maybe he'd matured something over the summer. She hoped so, then she would be more comfortable with her irrational feelings for him.
"For being such an obnoxious git over the last six years, but I promise this year I've changed. I'd... I'd really like it if we could spend some time getting to know each other properly. It doesn't even have to be like a date date, I just want to know you. Even if it is just as friends. You could come hang out with us, I know you and Remus are close." James babbled, coaxing another small laugh out of Lily.
"I'd like that" She replied.
"And we're head boy and girl so we'll be spending lots of time together anyway and... Wait really? You would?" He gawked, that wasn't the response he was expecting but hell he'd take it.
"Sure. You say you've changed and you do seem different. Maybe it's time for me to make a change too" Lily nodded.
"Maybe... We could change together?" James asked hopefully, fully aware of how god damn cheesy he sounded. He was reading too many of Remus' books...
Lily laughed, shaking her head "Sure, why not? I don't have anything to lose"
