Chapter 1

ERRCHHH!!! The car came spinning over the icy intersection and hit the driver's side of our Chevy with a BOOM!My mind was a wild blur, the world around me seemed to be moving so slow I could see the tiniest details. I could see the specs of dust in my mom's hair as she struggled with the wheel, her mouth twisted into a grimace of panic and confusion. Our car slid wildly across the pavement, a fresh layer of white parting as we careened by, revealing the black ice underneath. With a slow build-up of pressure,my ears popped. Then a waterfall of glass. We stopped as suddenly as it all began, the guardrail tight against the driver's side.

"MOM!!" I cried out in desperation, my own voice sent pain through my head then down into my extremities. She lay slumped against the window, motionless. "Mom, please. Please, mom, please" I said in almost a whisper. My voice sounded broken like the glass shards spread out across the floor from the windows.I could feel some sticking into my legs.

The world around me disappeared. All I saw was her. She wasn't moving, lying limp in the driver's seat. She seemed so far away, yet if I reached out I could touch her.She looked almost peaceful as if she'dbeenworking for a year nonstop and finally got rest. I thought she looked as if she were dreaming of far away lands where you didn't ever need to worry and could have whatever you wanted. Like in one of the fairy tales she read to me when I was little. But I knew she wasn't, I knew better. I pulled my body near her, a pain shot up my leg as I moved. I unbuckled her seat belt and pulled her head down into my lap slowly and gently.
