The Art of Mending Memories

Chapter 5

Suddenly I felt a warm arm sneak around my waist through the straps of my backpack. "Hey" I yell madly as I jump away from the arm and bumped into Kara, who in turn bumped into Kyle who had snuck his arm around her waist. Unlike me though, she enjoyed it. I glared up at Aaron as he smiled innocently down on me. I grabbed his wrist from around my back and pulled it out, flinging it away from me.

"May we join you ladies for lunch?" Kyle asked.

"No" I quickly answered back harshly.

Kara elbowed me in the side and I grunted. I thought I heard Aaron growl, but I couldn't be sure over Kara's voice. "Don't listen to her. She's just PMSing."

"I am not!" I complained as Aaron laughed next to me.

"Whatever. Don't listen to her anyways. Of course you guys can join us! We'd love to have you!"

"Speak for yourself" I mumbled as I walked into the cafeteria. Our school cafeteria can sit about 280 students. The tables are round with either eight, ten, or twelve seats. We walked over to our usual table at the side of the cafeteria near the windows. Ian was already there, sitting next to Sophie. Jean-Paul's backpack was on the table in front of the seat next to Sophie. We walked over to them. Kara went to sit in the seat next to Ian. I pulled her back by the handle of her backpack.

"Hey!" she squealed.

"You want the guys to sit with us, not me. So YOU have to sit next to them" I grumbled.

"Fine, but what the hell is the matter with you? I've never seen you be this bitchy. Not even when you really ARE PMSing."

"Nothing" I grumbled as I sat in the seat next to Ian. Kara sat next to me. Kyle sat next to her, and Aaron next to him. I noticed Aaron's hurt expression on his face, almost as if he's trying to decide whether or not he made the right choice whether or not to sit with me. Good. I hope he moves.

Ian turned to me as I sat down. "Kaelyn!" He yelled as he attacked me with a hug. "I missed you so much!"

I laughed, hugging him back. "I know what you mean. A whole week since was last saw each other. How did we live?"

He laughed. Ian was my first friend here. I moved when I was in eighth grade. On the first day he gave me a smile and welcomed me. We've been best friends ever since.

Ian has that grown-up little boy look. He's six foot two with wide shoulders and a round, kind face. Everything about him is open and inviting. He had this aura and personality that just makes you laugh.

"Hey Sophie" I said with a smile to Ian's girlfriend. "How are you? Did your mom buy those shoes you were telling me about that you wanted?"

Sophie smiled back. "Yes she did! And I'm wearing them, look!"

She stuck her foot out and I looked behind Ian to see. They were sandals with a gold base and gold Roman straps up her calves, almost to her knees.

"Nice! Those are awesome I love them."

She smiled at me. "Thanks Kaelyn. I love them too! Jean-Paul thinks they look stupid."

"Well I think Jean-Paul looks stupid." I replied back jokingly. She knew I wasn't serious.

"You look wonderful yourself, Kaelyn," Jean-Paul said as he sat down and put his backpack on the ground, replacing it with his nearly overflowing tray of food.

We laughed. "Come on Jean-Paul! How can you not love those shoes?"

"I just don't" he replied. "I think they look stupid."
