Dan laid confortable on his bed, nestled among the blankets and scrolling pages of tumblr on his laptop, slightly bored. He peeked a glance at the window, sighing at the sight of the apparently endless rain on the outside. The weather had been rainy and dull since early in that morning, so he decided it was better not to go anywhere and just stay in bed all day, being laizier than usual. So that was it. He left his room only once, to get some breakfast and use the bathroom, returning to his bed right after.
He yawned and closed his eyes for a second, paying attention to some noises coming from the other room, trying to guess what was happening there. Probably just Phil doing whatever. He could hear him talking and laughing, so it was likely that he was recording a new video or maybe he had just gone crazy after all, who knows? Suddenly everything went silent, Phil stopped talking and Dan remained quiet. The only distinguisable sound he recognized now was the one of the pouring rain outside and the cars on the streets. A door was closed inside the apartment and he heard footsteps along the corridor, abruptly stopping and being replaced by a knock on his bedroom door.
"Come in." - Dan said, sitting on the bed and turning on the light. The room immediately filled with bright, shiny light and he felt a burning sensation on his eyes, due to the fact that he spend most of the day in the dark. He rubbed his eyes trying to get rid of the burning when Phil slowly opened the door and walked in the room.
"Why are you still in your pajamas?" - Phil asked him, sounding confused.
"It's not like I'm planning to leave this room today, you know..." - Dan stated, still rubbing his eyes. - "Fuck, I think I'm blind..."
"Well, in case you gain your vision back, I was wondering if you could help me with a video I'm doing." - Phil showed him the camera he was holding and smiled.
Dan opened his eyes, now more used to all the brightness around him. His sight fell promptly upon Phil, who was standing by the door, smiling and wearing, nothing more, nothing less than a giraffe costume. He found it so cute and hilarious, he couldn't help but to start laughing at the situation. Phil's smile faded away as he watched his flatmate rolling on the bed, almost crying from laughing so much.
"What's so funny?" - He frowned, waiting patiently for an answer and not getting one, since Dan just couldn't stop laughing. "Fine. If you're just going to laugh and make fun of me, then I guess I don't need your help anymore."
Phil left the room, slamming the door as he walked away. Dan stopped laughing, wiping the tears away from his cheeks, staring blankly at the place where Phil stood only a minute before. What had just happened there? Was Phil really upset because he found the costume funny? He couldn't believe it. Phil just couldn't have taken that seriously. A strange feeling of guilt possessed him and he started to feel really bad about the whole situation, getting up at once and heading to Phil's room.
Dan walked slowly along the corridor, thinking about what he could say to Phil. He didn't want to mess things up even more, so he had to be careful with what he was going to say. Finally reaching his destiny, he waited a minute before knocking on the door, not so sure of what to do or say anymore. He took a deep breath, ran a hand through his hair, leaving it even messier than it already was, and knocked three times.
"Phil?" - He called, opening the door without waiting for proper permission.
He looked around the place, quickly spotting Phil who was sitting on his bed, wearing now his normal clothes and twiddling his thumbs, distractedly.
"Hey..." - Dan said, trying to get his attention.
"Did you come here to laugh at me again?" - Phil asked, without looking at the boy standing by his door.
"Phil, I don't know what your problem is, really." - Dan sighed, starting to get really frustrated. Since when did Phil act this way for such a stupid reason? He didn't ask for an invitation, he just climbed up on the bed, crawling up next to his friend. Phil continued with his attempt to ignore Dan, staring fixedly at his feet and trying not to look at the boy by his side.
"Look, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to laugh as I was making fun of you, or whatever. You totally got the wrong impression. I laughed because I found it funny and... cute." - Dan admitted. His cheeks blushed right away and he tilted his head forwards, twisting the end of his shirt nervously, waiting for Phil to say something. Which didn't happen. - "So you're just going to pretend I don't exist? Very mature of you, Phil. Very mature indeed."
"Did you find it cute? What do you mean by 'cute'?" - Phil turned to take a look at Dan for the first time since he entered the room, he had a puzzled look on his face.
"Well... I-I just didn't want to make it look like I was making fun of you, that's all." - Dan stated, trying to sound reasonable. He stuttered and his cheeks blushed once again. He tried desperately to hide it, but failed miserably.
Phil picked his chin up, causing both of them to look each other in the eyes, not expecting to witness Dan's white skin turning red. He smiled gently and caressed the boy's cheeks with his thumb.
Dan didn't understand what was happening. He couldn't control his body responses anymore and he just felt butterflies erupting from his stomach, causing that funny feeling on his belly. The feel of Phil's hand petting his skin made his heart speed, almost as if it was going to come out of his chest at any moment. His breathing became uneven and the palm of his hands began to sweat. Before he realized, they were drawing closer, like two magnets. Phil glanced down at Dan's lips and then back at his eyes, not sure of what to do but at the same time dying to take the next step. He started to slowly lean closer and closer, not daring to close his eyes (he wanted to watch every reaction coming from Dan) and stopped when they were about an inch away from each other. He had never seen Dan looking so nervous and innocent.
Dan was trembling from head to toe. He couldn't make up his mind wether what was about to happen was right or wrong. He actually didn't care much if it was wrong. Having Phil's lips so close to his, just made him want to kiss them even more. So in a fraction of second, he awkwardly closed the small gap between them. Surprised by the other boy's actions, but at the same time incredibly happy, Phil also closed his eyes and pulled him closer, kissing him back, opening his mouth a bit so Dan could slide his tongue inside. Dan did so and the kiss grew to be more passionate. He had Phil's face cupped in both of his hands, caressing his cheeks and messing up his hair once in a while. They broke the kiss then and looked deep into each other's eyes. Phil giggled at the look Dan had in his face, he could tell he had never been this confused before.
"You should see your face, Dan..." - Phil smiled a little and held one of Dan's hand, squeezing it playfully.
"Phil, what... why... I mean..." - Dan cleared his throath, trying to calm himself down. He still tried to process the thought that he had just kissed his best friend... And liked it more than he probably should.
"I've been wanting to do this for so long..."- Phil confessed.
"Are you serious? Why did you never tell me?"
"How was I supposed to know that you weren't going to freak out or reject me and never want to see me again? I couldn't ruin our friendship." - He still had Dan's hand in his and played distractedly with his fingers as he talked. He was totally taken by surprise when Dan leaned closer and pecked him on the lips quickly.
"I could never reject you, Phil. I... I love you." - Dan said at last, feeling as if he took a pretty heavy weight of his shoulders.
"What?" - Phil opened his eyes wide, wondering if Dan actually said what he thought he'd heard.
"I love you and I'm sorry it took me so long to come to this conclusion."
Phil smiled and pulled Dan tight into a long, meaningful hug and they stayed like that for what seemed forever.
"I love you too, Dan." - Phil whispered into his ear and they both smiled.
"Also, I'm really sorry I laughed at you giraffe costume." - Phil pulled away a bit and chuckled.
"But you thought I looked cute and that's what really matters!!" - He kissed Dan on the cheek, then grabbing his camera and walking out of the room. - "Now you come and help me with the video."
Dan quickly got up and followed Phil, excited with the idea of what would happen in their lifes from now on.
