Sarah sat with her legs crossed, phone in hand. It was adoption day. A day she was never very fond of. People were coming in and out, as she watched the people she grew up with leave. Indie bands were blaring through her headphones while she shot jealous glares at those who were leaving. After about an hour, families started coming in less, and less kids were leaving. At 2:40 pm, 10 minutes before adoption day was over, two people, both woman, burst through the door.
"Ms. Hernandez and Ms. Jauregui! Glad to see you could make it!" Ms. Ramirez said with a tacky, overly cheerful voice that clearly made the pair uncomfortable.
"Yeah, hello Ms. Ramirez," The woman said, eyeing her friend.
"So, what age did you say you wanted again?" She asked, completely disregarding the couple's weary complexions.
"12 to 14, Ms. Ramirez," The man responded.
"Okay, thank you," Ms. Ramirez then walked over to her desk and made an announcement for all 12 - 14 year olds to come line up in the kitchen.
--------------
Since Sarah was the oldest of the bunch, she was at the very end, meaning she would be the last one they interviewed, and that they would most likely have already chosen the "perfect" one. She tugged at the ends of her 'Fifth Harmony' sweater, impatiently waiting for the girls to enter. After roughly 10 minutes, the pair, along with Ms. Ramirez emerged from the kitchen. Sarah's eyes focused on them, and realized who they were. She looked down at her sweatshirt. It suddenly felt much more hot than it was, seeing as it was 40 degrees Fahrenheit. She peeled the hoodie off before they saw, revealing a plain creme shirt, and mentally cursed for not wearing a long sleeve shirt. A. because it was freezing, and B. you could clearly see faded scars scattered along her wrist. One of the girls - who she recognized as Lauren Jauregui - looked down the line, before her eyes settled on one person. Sarah.
--------------
After what seemed like hours, it was finally Sarah's turn. Ms. Ramirez pulled her into her office where Ally and Lauren were. She gave Sarah a slight nod and a sympathetic smile, before turning on her heel and exiting the room. Sarah turned her head back to the pair.
"Hi there! I'm Ally and this is my friend, Lauren," the green eyed girl shot a smile at her.
"I'm Sarah," she replied, her voice void of emotion.
"Well, it's very nice to meet you, Sarah," Lauren said. (OML SAID IS SUCH A BORING WORD BUT I DON'T HAVE A THESAURUS )
They continued talking for fifteen minutes more, when Ms. Ramirez pulled Sarah out of the office and allowed Lauren and Lauren to make a decision.
The girls only had to share a single glance before they knew who their new family member would be.
Sarah Marie Blanchard.
A soon-to-be not so average 14 year old.
