Prologue

Monteregionni, Italy- Dragomir Mansion- 1320 PM

I looked out from the window of car, very nervous. Everything outside looked extravagant, just thinking that was just only the entrance, Flowers were neatly planted in a formation of an isle and it looked peaceful, there were lots of small tables with matching ornaments around it and people scattered around chattering as waiters were giving out small snacks and wine. I noticed the building was shining brightly against the sun as the crest of my family shone brightly of all. I kept thinking of several negative thoughts that might happen at this Inheritance Ceremony and I groaned at every single one of them. I sat back, opening my eyes, just hoping that it would run smoothly. I firmly put both of my hands on my lap, and I myself noticed I was shaking.

What is happening with me?

I put my head down, I could feel my tears wanting to go out through my eyes but I tried to stop it. I don’t want to go to this ceremony and inherit a family that could later on be evil because of me! I don’t want to inherit something that could be bad for the future or worse… It would…It would change me.

I curled my hands into fists.

I don’t want to cry…I will not cry.

But before I knew what was happening to me, my eyes were clouded with tears and I could see teardrops landing on my hands. I closed my eyes.

Stop…Stop crying now. I will not cry, I--

Before I could finish that sentence, I could feel that something or someone was holding my hand. I was clear on my field of vision and clearly this hand was a man’s. His right was holding the nearest shaking hand of mine firmly with that my hands went still, because it felt a familiar security with the ones that were holding mine.  I looked up surprised. My right hand man was looking at my blue tear-filled eyes with his green ones with worry.

“Are you alright?” he asked. He held my face with both of his arms with gentleness and with his thumbs he lightly wiped my tears away.

“I… I’m fine. Don’t worry.” I answered shakily.

“Don’t lie to me, Decimo. From the obvious looks of it you are not okay. Tell me what’s wrong?” He said sternly

I sighed, still shaken. He got me again.

“Fine. Look, I’m afraid.”

It was obvious that he was startled.

“Why? You. Afraid? It’s not like you. Tell me, Why?” he said.

And to that I told him everything, about not wanting to inherit such a family and such a title. I told him every fear I had about this ceremony and lastly I told him that I was afraid it would change me.

After I finished, I breathed in heavily then did the opposite of it and looked at him.

“You know, you shouldn’t be afraid.” He said calmly.

“Then tell me how not to be afraid.” I snapped. Why would he tell me not to be afraid when he sees clearly that I obviously am?

“Let me finish Decimo.” He said. I looked at him, with a blank expression. He then reached out for my other hand and held them firmly.

“You shouldn’t be afraid because that’s what you are. Fearless. You take every challenge that has been given to you, good or bad. Second, this is your destiny, to inherit what has been given to you by your biological parents and your ancestors you know that. Third, every fear that you told me about this? You’ll overcome it I know that, not because you have the potential but because we, your guardians, are always here for you, even though far away. And lastly it won’t change you. If ever you lose sight of the right path, I’ll be there to take you back. Because every choice you make in the future, does not define who you are but what you strongly believe in.”

I looked at him wide eyed.

He’s right.

I shouldn’t be afraid.

I let go of his hands, and sat still and after a few seconds I took my weapon and set it ablaze. My resolve is firm.

“You know, you shouldn’t let out that much.” He laughed.

I smiled at him, still trying to put into my thoughts everything he said and his laugh of course.

I exhaled.

“Are you ready, Decimo?” He asked formally.

“You know, you don’t have to call me that every time, Salvatore. I’m your Fiancée, call me by my name.” I told him.

He quietly laughed.

“Are you ready Genevieve?” He said softly, as he held my free hand.

I closed my eyes and said. “I remember. If there’s one thing I learned from when we were back at our younger years at the Academy is that, Every person decides wisely with the guidance of those people important to them and I know that even the strongest fall” I said firmly.

“I’m ready.”
