Josh and I walk into a small brick interview room that has a metal table at one end and a mirror on the opposite wall. The entire room is painted plain white. The fluorescent light that hangs above the table occasionally flickers as it slowly dies. Sitting at the table is Doctor Albert wearing his white lab coat and a thick red and blue tie underneath it.
Josh and I enter the room. I'm carrying a manila folder and drop it on the table. Both of us sit down across from Doctor Albert, and I start off. "Where are the bodies?"
Doctor Albert looks at me and then over to Josh and then back to me, "I don't know," He wipes sweat off of his forehead.
"You understand the seriousness of what is going on here? We're in the middle of two murder investigations and there are no bodies. Now, I need you to tell me where they are," I say.
"I'm not sure I'm following you. Are you accusing me of taking the bodies away from the morgue?" He glances at me, then Josh, then back to me.
"We've checked everyone out that has anything to do with your operation and they're all clean. They all have alibis but you. You are the only one who swiped in after hours. You were the only one at the lab both times it happened so you must have done it. Stop the bullshit and tell us where the bodies are," I say.
Doctor Albert takes the sleeve of his lab coat and mops away the heavy film of sweat over his forehead. "Sheriff, I can assure you that I take my profession very seriously, and I have never been involved in any type of inappropriate behavior in these cases or in any other case."
I lean back in my chair. I'm going try a different tactic. I open the file in front of me and flip through a few pages. "You worked as a mortician before you went to medical school. Correct?"
"Yes, I worked for my father during holidays and the summer. My family owns a funeral home in Andersonville."
"That's interesting. You want to know something else that is interesting? I went by your house today and I noticed you have a high fence in the backyard. Why do you have that?"
"The fence? You want to know about my fence?"
"Yes, why do you have such a high fence?"
"It's for my dog. We have a family dog."
"What kind of dog?" Josh asks.
"A German Sheppard."
I sit up in my seat, "Tell me about that dog. Is it a mean dog?"
He eyes dart back and forth from me to Josh, "My dog? It's a nice dog. It's really for my kids."
"That's interesting because I pulled the files from Animal Control and your dog has been reported on three different occasions. You have a problem with your dog?"
"No, I don't have a problem with my dog. Those were times when he got out of the backyard. Why are you asking me about my dog?"
I stand up. "You want to know why?"
"Yes, what is this about?"
I grab the bottom of the table, lift it up and slam it down on the floor, "I want to know about your dog because Jenn Hunter was found dead with a bite mark on her jugular vein. I think you went out to the field, handcuffed Jenn to a post and attacked her with your dog. I think you and some people you know are sick fucks." I'm right in his face. Pieces of spit decorate his glasses. He pushes himself backward in his chair. "I think you coordinated this with them and then you staged this dramatic disappearance of the bodies. You thought everyone would be so mesmerized by the bodies leaving the morgue that they wouldn't suspect you, but you fucked up because when it's all put together it all points to you. You were the only employee there, and who knows more than the coroner about how important the body is to a murder investigation?"
