Rosa was alone. She only had her family, her mother, her father, and her brother Mathew.
Her Father was the owner of a large business that catered parties, causing the entire family to go to big celebrations at least twice every week. Her mother did not have a job, because getting a job as a woman was something that very rarely happened, and her mother did not want a job either, as she thought it was absurd for a woman to have a job that was 'for men'. Her brother followed in his father's footsteps, or tried to, as he was a busboy at a restaurant that his father's business owned. Rosa on the other hand, did nothing but stay in her room all night, excepting the nights that her and her family went to parties, which she was forced to go to.
It was not like Rosa didn't like the presence of other humans, it was just that she did not enjoy the presence of the humans she was forced to be friends with. Her mother insisted that she talk to other girls, who were apparently 'more formal' or 'correct' than her. What that meant was, Rosa wasn't 'correct' because her hair was messy sometimes and she didn't want to fix it, or Rosa wasn't 'correct' because she didn't doll herself up with lots of makeup so the boys thought she was pretty.
"If someone truly loves me, they won't mind my face without makeup!" She would always tell them, but nobody cared if their husband actually loved them, they just thought that their role in the world was to please men by making them food or with sexual favors. Rosa didn't believe that, she was just to afraid to admit that she thought women should be equal to men.
In this world, men would abuse women, but the women would stay with them, because apparently "Men's needs are far more important than women's, you don't see women fighting for this country, you don't see women going out and getting jobs".
Rosa hated men, but she also hated most women. The kind of women who were shallow enough to think that they didn't matter, that makeup made them pretty, that their only purpose in this world was to please men. The bad part about this was, all of the people that Rosa was forced to be friends with, were exactly like that. They would abandon their friends, hurt themselves, and degrade themselves for the sake of their husband's wants.
Most girls got married from 14-16 where she lived, but Rosa was 17, and still not married. Her mother and father were desperately trying to find her a husband who would marry her, preferably someone who her father worked for, because that would mean good for her father's reputation in business.
Rosa had not met one man who she was even remotely interested in, let alone wanted to marry. All of the men had huge egos, were sexist, and if a girl wasn't pretty enough, they had no purpose. Rosa thought that women were great, they actually did way more than most men. Most men only sat around at work and fired people. Women on the other hand, had children, fed children, fed their husbands, cleaned the house, and most of all, put up with their horrible husbands.
The problem with Rosa preferring women, was that she preferred women all together, and would even go to the extent to marry them. The problem with that, is that women-loving-women was strongly frowned upon. So much that if you were in a relationship with someone of the same gender, you would be arrested, or possibly even killed.
Rosa longed to find someone with the same desires that she had, or at least a decent friend who wouldn't think she was a freak because she didn't want to put on this 'act' that required her to be happy with a husband. She knew that she would never be able to find someone like that, and the thought of that made her upset, knowing that she would never find someone that she would be comfortable with.
The only time that Rosa really left her house was when she walked down to the club down the street. The club was full of shady people who never talked to anyone except for the bartender. They would have singers, comedians, and poets come up on stage and perform, which Rosa enjoyed. She liked that nobody ever talked to her there, and that if she ever wanted a drink, the bartender would never ask her age or if she was allowed to drink, so she was able to have a drink every once in a while. She wasn't a heavy drinker, but she still enjoyed a small amount every once in a while.
The only thing that bothered her while she was there, was that men would look at her in a weird way, and when they did, she would usually move to another part of the room, or tell the bartender, who would usually ask the men to stop, and if they didn't, he would kick them out. The bartender was the only decent man who Rosa had ever met, he respected women, and understood how some women were fake and would do anything for their husbands.
The club was the only thing that kept Rosa happy, and she appreciated it, because nobody else knew that she went there. She would tell her mother that she was going to her friend 'Sarah's' house, who was a made up person, and her mother never questioned it, because she was just desperate for her daughter to have some friends that were 'proper'.
Rosa was always sneaking out, and nobody ever questioned, because they all thought she was weird, and that she didn't have any real potential. Because of this, if she was hurt or kidnapped, nobody would know, but Rosa didn't care. She just wanted to get away from the world, to get rid of all of her problems, and go down to the club, to absorb the atmosphere and music.
