We started as strangers…
[Second Grade]
As a kid, all I wanted was to play and have plenty of playmates. So on that fateful day, the day I saw him make his way in the room timidly, I knew what I’m supposed to do.
That day, I approached you during snacks’ time. We we’re only in second grade, by then. I said, “Hi!” and I waved my hand at you and sat on the seat next to you. You shyly waved your hand at me and smiled, “Hi.”
“What’s your name?” I’d ask.
And you would answer, “My name’s Paul. How about you, what’s yours?”
“I’m Lia, nice to meet you. Would you like to play?” I asked while finishing my sandwich and quickly grabbing a ball. You nodded and excitedly hopped next to me, happy having a friend on a first day.
…and that’s the start of everything. We never thought that starting that day, we would be the best of friends, ever.
We don’t always have the same class, but we find a way… always.
[Third & Fourth Grade]
We we’re in third grade and we we’re separated by sections. I’m in the section-A and you’re in the section-B but that was never a hindrance for us to play during snack’s time and when the classes ends. We would meet under our favorite tree in the secret garden we both found during summer. I thought our friendship would end by this time because we’re not in the same class, but no. I was wrong; instead, it became stronger, building great foundation over our friendship.
We would have different cycle of friends but we would always end up with each other at the end of the day. I still end up staring at those magnificent brown eyes that you got.
Did you ever remember? When you had your glasses on? It was the first day of third grade. I thought I wouldn’t see your brown eyes but whenever I wanted to see them and hesitate to ask you to remove your glasses; you would smile and voluntarily remove those black rimmed glasses and reveal those brown eyes.
Did you ever remember? When we had each other as partners in a dance and everyone was having an awkward moment with their partners except us. We would always say, “Good thing you’re my best friend and we’re comfortable with each other.” And you would twirl me in your arms and hug me from the back.
We had each other on everywhere we go to. And somehow, we managed to have the same cycle of friends. And maybe it became a routine whenever its first day of class. I would look for your name, and you would look for mine.
When we finally became classmates, we had the best of times together.
[Fifth Grade]
It was the first day of class, and as a routine, I came look at the list of names in my section, hoping to see yours. I was so happy to see that your name was finally on that list after two years! I looked around and looked for you. Then you suddenly showed up and we both jumped with joy from the great news. Your eyes twinkling with happiness, mirroring mine.
