I had to wait at the bottom of the wall for Tony to come down. I picked up a long blade of grass and stuck it in my mouth to chew. Several other hunting groups finally came back, carrying various animals.
Tony came down and unzipped his uniform, tucking it in the cupboard.
"Let's go out of the Compound, I've had enough of people for a while." He said, turning towards me. I pressed the button to go out and the doors swung open, revealing the woods. We both were silent, just listening to the crunch of dried leaves under our feet.
After a while of walking, I began to notice I didn't recognize anything around me. Usually I remember where I've adventured out, but this was all new to me. Tony seemed to be looking around like I was. We were both lost.
We kept walking, I was hoping that we would find something that was familiar. I could feel the temperature change and I glanced around to see what made the increase in cold. Tony shivered as I saw a large, metallic plate standing vertical, partially hidden by trees.
"What's that?" He asked, looking the plate up and down.
"Well Tony, it's metal." I didn't directly look at him, but I could tell he rolled his eyes. I examined around the plate, which was in fact, not a plate. "I think it's a circle of metal or something? Maybe a dome?" I put my hand on the cold metal. Right as I did though, a girl screamed, making us both jump. Tony looked around frantically.
"What was that?" I didn't answer him but ran in the direction of the scream. I ran along the curved metal to my left and found a girl huddled in a ball on the ground. She looked like she wasn't breathing very much and her face was as white as a sheet.
"Hey! Are you okay?" I said as I turned her over. The first thing I noticed, was that she had a metal plate attached to her right eye.
Without thinking, I pulled the girl over my shoulders and I started walking back towards where I assumed the camp was.
"Ash, wait!" Tony said, running up beside me. "Where are you going? We don't know where the camp is."
"I don't think we should leave the girl out here, she looks like she needs help. We are her best chance." I said, without stopping.
We made it back to camp in a little over half an hour. Because it seemed like the best option, we started walking North and found trees we recognized.
The moment we got back to camp I took her to the medical center and laid her on one of the beds. I decided I better tie her up in case she was someone dangerous. I looked around for a rope or something and found an old sheet. Tearing a piece, I bound her right wrist to the bedpost.
I sat down on a metal chair resting next to the bed. Looking at her, I noticed she had really pale skin. It was lighter than my people here. Her features were also softer, more feminine almost. The fact that she was new and beautiful made me want to know more about her.
Tony walked in with Doctor Smith. He glanced at the screen telling the girls vitals. Picking up his clipboard, he wrote several things down before turning to Tony and me.
"Well, not that either of you care, but we should take this eyepiece off of her. I think it is messing with her brain activity."
"Are you sure? What if you hurt her?" Tony asked, fear laced in his voice. Even though I rolled my eyes at him, I was thinking the same thing.
"Yes. I believe it will be okay." He said, his attention now on the girl. He reached forward and pulled a little on the metal plate. It came free easier than I thought it would. There was a little blue light that turned off when it was detached from her skin. We all waited a beat to see if she would react but she did nothing.
