The mermaid sighed heavily, holding back tears as she handed her child over to the human. She sank back into the water, her light green tail flicking unhappily, and her mate hugged her tightly as they both watched their first and only girl leave the water.
"Make sure Zara is safe, Delilah!" The mermaid sobbed, causing the woman to turn around.
"She will be in good hands, Cressa," Delilah assured her, holding the baby closely in her arms. The child's tiny legs and arms were covered in bluish-purple scales, which seemed to be disappearing as she dried off. The woman turned again and set off, her red cloak billowing out behind Delilah as she walked off into the snowy night.
"She'll be alright, Cressa, believe that," the merman rubbed her shoulders comfortingly. "These are times of war, and Zara could've gotten hurt if she had stayed behind with the tribe. She'll be safer and happier on land, where she'll have no worries."
"I know, Gale. I just wish we could've raised her instead, like proper parents. I feel like we've made a horrible mistake by sending her away though," Cressa stared at her's and her mate's green and pale orange tails. "She'll never experience this."
"And you promise that our little Destiny will be healthy and safe with you, right?" The two ocean nymphs double-checked.
"Yes, she will," Quirella replied exasperatedly.
"Poor thing," the female nymph, Nanette, stared down at the sleeping infant. "Going through such horrors so early in her life. Mother gone, father missing, and Gienie and I, her only living relatives, are too busy is look after her! We are horrible grandparents."
Quirella lifted the bundle up into her arms and stood up, her boots sinking into the marshy land. "I have to leave now if I want to be back before dark. Goodbye, Nanette. Gienie." With that, Quirella turned and disappeared into the steadily growing fog.
Nanette sighed. "I know it's best for Destiny, but I can't help feeling that we've made a horrible mistake by sending Destiny away from her rightful home. We'll never see her again, and I'm sure her mother would've wanted us to raise her daughter."
Gienie looked at his wife. "I'm sure that Xenia understands that we're doing the best we can."
"I sure hope so," Nanette looks up to the stars. "I sure hope so."
Little did either supernatural family know that in sixteen years, the two children would realize their true heritage.
