Alden got an iMessage from Fe while he was getting ready for his book launch. He decided he'd have to go back home because he wasn't able to pack anything decent. What he had on was just a white v-neck shirt and ripped jeans - not exactly the kind of clothing one would wear for this type of special occasion.
Ms. Fe
Just so you know, here's the current line for your book launch here at the mall. We're only supposed to accommodate 300 people but the mall is already filling up with these screaming girls. Don't they understand that your book was actually a proposal for the woman you love? I can't with these teenage girls.
Oh, and there are cougars too. Just so you know.
Alden shook his head as he read her message. This is insane, he thought.
Maine approached her as he was tying his shoes and hugged him from behind, her hands draping from his shoulders to his chest.
"Good luck on your book launch." she whispered. "Just know that I'm so proud of you."
Thanks he said, turning slightly so he could kiss her on the lips.
"Just try not to check out too many girls while you're there," she teased, kissing him lightly on his ear.
Alden chuckled. "You very well know that you will be the only thing on my mind the whole time." he said.
"Oh, I know. " she said matter-of-factly. "Especially after what I'm about to do," she said, crawling her hands farther down his stomach.
Alden quickly grabbed her hand, turned around and gently pushed her on the bed. "Maine... as much as I would love to see what you're about to do, I really need to leave early to get some proper clothes. Save it for later?" He said as he hovered on top of her. He kissed her gently on the lips.
Maine smiled at him naughtily. "Oh you bet."
Alden paused and looked at her for a few seconds, his face suddenly etched with worry.
"What's wrong?" she asked.
"Maine, I need to tell you something." he began.
"What is it?"
Alden heaved a huge sigh. "Brent is back. He posted bail and got out, and the... fan mails and the gift that Ms Fe dropped, they're actually from him. She said they were left in her office this morning. He has sent me threats."
"What?" Maine exclaimed and they both sat up. "Is that why you have been acting weird?"
"Yes. Jerald called me last night to let me know. I couldn't tell you because I know how terrified you get when it comes to Brent and the last thing I need is for you to lose focus. I'm telling you now because I'm going to be away for a few hours and I need you to be aware of the danger," he told her.
"Alden..." she said and once again he saw the fearful look on her eyes. He could see her being almost petrified with fear.
"Maine," he said, his voice pleading. "Please, I need you to be vigilant. Please tell me you'll take care of yourself or I will cancel this book launch now."
"You can't do that at the last minute." she said.
"Just come with me," he told her, touching her hand.
"But if I go there you won't be able to look after me. You won't trust me in someone else's watch, will you? I think I will be safer here. I'll make sure the locks are good as soon as you leave." she said.
"Promise me you'll be safe. And call me right away if you sense something is wrong" he told her firmly. "I'll drive here right away as soon as the event is done, okay?"
She nodded.
"And start packing your stuff. We'll leave as soon as I get back." he said as he quickly grabbed his things.
"We'll run away again?" she asked.
"We have no choice," he answered. "But this time it will just be between us. We can't trust anyone"
They walked silently towards the front door and Alden turned to her before he walked out. "Take care and lock all doors," he said.
"Take care of yourself too, please." she said and she hugged him tightly.
"I will. Lock the doors now." He planted a quick kiss on her forehead and left."
Maine swiftly bolted all three locks on their front door as soon as Alden left and went to the kitchen to check the doors there. She then went upstairs to check on her mourning friend.
