Taking a deep breath and thinking of hot chocolate I jumped into the ice cold water. Underneath, I could scream at the shocking temperature change, but I’d rather not seeing as how I want to live. Not wanting to stay under any longer I surfaced and swam to the other side, “Hey look, a rope.” I pointed up to the tree branch that held the rope. It looked strong enough for people to swing off of it.  Drake looked up and saw it dangling there. “Sweet.” He mumbled before jumping from branch to branch finally reaching the rope. He looked down, “Watch out.” I swam to the side as he released the rope from its tangled mess.

The rope hit the water with a loud smack and water droplets went everywhere. I heard a loud war cry and saw Drake jumping in from the top of the branch. The way he landed was harsh; his body had somehow turned in the air making it so his right side of his body slam into the water. I held my breath waiting for him to come up, I decided I’d count do 10 and if he wasn’t up I’d get him.

1…. Still nothing, 2….3….4….5…. This isn’t funny, I’m not counting fast and he still isn’t up. 6….7….8….9…. I took a deep breath, 10. I plunged myself under the ice cold water and opened my eyes; my eyes went into shock, quickly adjusting to the temperature and water. I saw parts of Drakes shaggy hair and swam towards him. He was really deep into the water; I didn’t even know the water went this far down. Holding onto the last breath I could manage I reached my hand out grasping his hair. I pulled him up by his hair, finally seeing his arm I grabbed for that instead of his hair, I’m sure he wouldn’t be happy about that. I got to the surface and put his arm over my shoulder making it easier to swim to the shore.

Once I got there I laid him down on the grass and put my ear to where his heart is, he wasn’t breathing and his heart wasn’t beating. I panicked; I didn’t know what to do! I mean I know I’m supposed to do CPR but how?! I replayed countless movies in my head and did as they did, I performed CPR, I came to the part where I had to blow air into his mouth and I opened his mouth, plugged his nose and blew air into his mouth. I pulled back watching for a few seconds until he turned over in a coughing fit. Once he was done with that he sat up looking around.

“What happened?” He asked looking to me. I bit my lip, “You jumped from there,” I pointed to the branch, “And you landed wrong, you probably hit your head or something because you didn’t come back up.” I shrugged. He scratched at his head and muttered an ‘oh’. He stood up shaking his hair and throwing clothes on. He then looked back at me, “Ready to go?” He asked impatiently. I stood up and put my hands on my hips. “Thank you, Mia for saving my life, I could’ve drowned down there but you risked your life to save mine,” I mocked in his voice, “Oh no problem Drake, you would’ve done the same.”  He rolled his eyes and turned around; I walked to where my stuff was and got changed. “You’re being dramatic, acting like I owe my life to you.” He laughed pathetically. “May I remind you if it weren’t for me you wouldn’t have a life.”

I walked onto the path with my arms crossed; I heard grumbles and annoyance coming from Drake. I came to a little intersection and decided to go right. “You’re going the wrong way.” Drake pointed to the left. Spinning on my heel I turned around and went the right way. We came across the football field where football was practicing. I held back a laugh and looked at Drake. “Aren’t you late for something?” I smirked; He looked onto the field and cursed under his breath. He turned to me, “Well it was uh… yeah, bye.” He then ran off to tell his coach he was getting ready or something.

When I got to my locker I pulled out my music and turned Pray by Justin Bieber on. This song, like all the others I listen to, speaks volumes to me. This is one of those songs that makes you want to do something for the world, make it a better place even. Smiling to myself letting the Canadian boy’s voice fill my ears, I walked home. This time I skipped the cemetery, I’d do my research on Jade Mason today. Hopefully I wasn’t in trouble when I got home.

Walking up the steps of the house I saw another car there. That’s weird, we never get guests here. Walking up the front and quietly opening the door I heard whispers. “We’ve got to be careful, the detectives are in the states investigating.” An unfamiliar voice sounded. I scrunched up my eyebrows, the only detectives that I could remember being in the states were the ones investigating the missing girl. “Well they aren’t going to find anything, the tracks are pretty covered.” That was my dad’s voice this time.

They were too engulfed in their conversation that they wouldn’t hear me creep up into my room. Smiling in victory I sat on my bed and pulled out my phone. I typed in Jades name and the year she died. It was so long ago that I’m sure there wouldn’t be anything on it. Maybe a family member posted a memoir or something. Coming across a blog that had Jades name on it I clicked it, pictures of her filled the blog, a newspaper article was also on it. I read through the paper and found out that she died because a freak accident involving her dad and an axe. I read further.

“20 year old, Jade Mason was looking for her dad out in the snow. She heard grunts coming from the shed and walked towards it, her dad, Charles Mason (40) was cutting wood for the family to have heat, the axe slipped from his hands and went flying to Jade, the axe stabbed into her heart, she died immediately.”

I was confused as to who knew this and how, but things get passed down from time to time. Shrugging and turning my phone on lock I pulled out my science book doing the rest of the work I had to do today. I thought that maybe I’d see a different much kinder side to Drake, but I was wrong, as I always am.Getting frustrated with my work I closed my book and fell asleep.

I woke up to a quite house, this isn’t normal. I got out of bed, got dressed and went downstairs. I stopped on the stairs smelling cinnamon rolls. My stomach growled, I love cinnamon rolls and this was a new level of low. I walked the rest of the way and saw a lot of people in my kitchen. “Hello darling! You’re up!” My mom chirped giving me a tight hug; I pulled back and gave a small smile. What am I supposed to do? I stepped down and walked into the kitchen looking at the delicious cinnamon rolls, the icing was meted to perfection. My mouth started to water, “Go on Hun, have one.” My dad urged smiling; he sat down with the people at the table with a cup of… coffee? He never drinks coffee. Maybe they’re changing their ways and not hurting me?

I smiled happily and skipped to the table taking a seat and taking a bite of the roll. Everyone was silently staring at me as I ate it. I gave them all a confused glance and they just shrugged it off. Once I swallowed the goodness, all the people changed into faces I’ve never seen before. Their teeth had grown to be like piranhas, their eyes glowed yellow like a cats. I screamed and tried moving but I couldn’t. I was stuck in my chair and it was frightening.

I woke up with a jolt, sweat pouring down me like I had taken a walk under a waterfall. I looked around me and realized it was just a dream, a creepy dream at that. Looking to my right I saw that it was time for me to get up and go to school. Getting out of bed I put on some sweats and a shirt, again I didn’t feel like dressing up.
