"Julianna!" My mother yells at me. "We're going to be late!"
Her voice is shrill and obnoxious, like ice picks being drilled into my ears.
I don't respond, just slowly tie my red sneakers.
My mother, whom is supposed to be Amity, isn't so Amity behind closed doors.
The Aptitude Test was a relief. It meant I'd be out of here - Amity that is - in a few weeks. Days even.
But when the man who took my test - an Erudite - spoke three words that caused my brain to burn.
"You are Divergent."
And my world succumbed to the pressure of mental psychosis.
My Aptitude Test giver was an Erudite man. What he looked like didn't matter, but he said I was dangerous - that Divergence was dangerous - and I should tell no one.
Which I knew.
My mother instilled fear in Divergence since I was very young.
I walk out and my mother sighs loudly.
"Took you long enough." She scoffs. "Remember what we talked about. You're made for Amity." Her voice is a growl.
She pushes out of the house, a fake smile plastered on her face.
I follow her out and we all climb into the truck that will take us to the ceremony.
[*]
All the Amity walk into the building, which is segregated into five different groups.
Amity, Abnegation, Candor, Dauntless and Erudite.
I'm pushed into a seat surrounded by 16-year old banjo-strumming softies.
I've never belonged here and I never will.
Even if I did get Amity on my Aptitude test.
My last name is Gray, so I'm fairly close to the beginning.
I zone out, ignoring everything Marcus Eaton says.
I've always hated the guy. Even before the child abuse rumor, which, in my eyes, is the truth. I've experienced the look of an abused child.
I see it in the mirror everyday.
"Julianna Gray," Marcus' thick voice calls me and I walk up, rubbing my sweaty palms against my thighs.
He hands me the serrated knife.
I take it in sweaty palms and place it on my left palm.
I have known my whole life, which Factions I did not belong in.
Abnegation and Candor. I'm scared of honesty and I am far from selfless.
Erudite was a weak competitor because I do not think before I speak.
So, it was left to Amity and Dauntless.
Two complete opposites.
The two results of my Aptitude Test.
So which do I choose?
My faction or my future?
