Emily Field saw Emily Fields staring back at her. Except it wasn't her. Or was it? One Emily had fair skin, and chlorine damaged blonde hair. The other had darker skin and black hair. Surely they weren't the same Emilys. Yet there they both were.
"Hello" Tv Emily greeted, proving to A that she wasn't the weakest link. You had to be strong to face yourself from some other world and still have your sanity intact.
"Uh, hi" Book Emily responded, ever the bashful one.
"So I guess we're supposed to be each other? If so, then we should probably talk."
"Yeah probably."
"I just have one question."
"I most likely can't answer it."
"If we're meant to be the same person, why do we look so different?"
"I don't know. All I know is, I wish I had your hair. It's not chlorine damaged and green like mine" Book Emily told the other Emily.
"Thanks! I wish I had your blue eyes. They're really noticeable."
Book Emily beamed. No one ever complimented her back home. But was it weird to rely on compliments from yourself, even if you were a totally different person? Literally.
"Do you have an A?" TV Emily blurted out, dying to know.
"Do I? Yeah, you could say that."
"Well do you know who they are?"
"Kind of. It's complicated."
"Complicated?" TV Emily asked, thinking back over the past year. "I can handle complicated."
"Well..." Book Emily trailed off, not wanting to say that Alison was A, in case the other Emily was also in love with her. After a minute of stuttering for the right words, she finally blurted out without much thought, "Did you love Alison?"
TV Emily was taken back by this question. She looked down and choked out a 'yes'.
"So are you still? In love with her, I mean."
"I'm not so sure."
It was Book Emily's turn to be taken back. And she usually got defensive when someone didn't like Ali. And even herself was no exception.
"Why? What's not to love?! She's so beautiful, and makes me feel special, and...and..."
"Exactly. She made us feel like garbage, but we fell in love with those few, rare moments when she pretended to love us back. Why should we love her?"
Book Emily struggled to find an answer. She couldn't think of a reason to love Ali. But she did, for some reason. Or maybe she didn't anymore? All she knew was, she had compromised her friend's lives to ave Ali's, who had just revealed to not only be A, but not even being the same Ali.
"Um, how's Carolyn in your little world?" Book Emily asked, wanting to change the subject. She wanted to know if she was hated by her sister in both worlds, or just hers.
"Who?"
"Carolyn. You know, our sister?"
"Sister? Sorry, I'm an only child."
Book Emily was shocked, and slightly jealous. She had always wanted to be an only child. TV Emily felt the same feeling toward the other girl. Siblings had always sounded good to her. If only either of them knew what the others life was like. They'd be just content with how they are.
"So I guess you get all of mom and dad's attention, huh?" Book Emily tried, hoping to lighten the mood.
"Well, my dads in the army, so he's not really at home. I would be shocked, but I'm guessing we shouldn't assume anything about our lives, as they are so obviously different."
"Yeah."
"So do you swim? My shoulder got injured, so I've been put off of the team for a bit."
"Um, wow. No, I, uh, actually don't really like swimming anymore."
Both nodded, an awkward silence falling upon them.
"You are gay though, right?" TV Emily wanted to clarify.
"Yeah, I guess. I did actually date one guy after I came out though."
"Like, seriously dated?" Book Em nodded. "How serious?"
"Serious enough to have sex with him."
TV Em could not contain her gasp. She had sex, with a guy?! That was crazy. Absurd. Completely and utterly implausible. But the other Em wasn't finished.
"And I had his baby."
The bomb had dropped.
"You-you what?! Seriously? How? What happened? How did you hide it from mom and dad? Where is the kid?"
"Uhm, let me see here. I'm serious, I'd figure pretty much the usual way, the guy left me, I stayed with my sister when I had her, and she was adopted by a nice family."
TV Emily was stunned to say the least. After a minute she spoke up.
"What's her name?"
"Violet. They named her."
Even though it wasn't her kid, TV Em still cared. In some weird, not really way, it was technically her kid. Technically.
"So," she began, moving on. Both knew they didn't have much time, meaning there was no time to waste on taking in the facts. "You are you dating now?"
"No one at the moment" Book Emily sighed, thinking of Jordan, The Preppy Thief.
"Oh. Well, not to be mean or anything, but did you ever actually have a girlfriend?"
"The first girl I dated was Maya St. Germain. But we're not together anymore.
TV Emily felt guilty, knowing what it felt like to loose Maya. Sadly, she thought, they both shared that.
"Do you still miss her?" she asked.
"Well, I broke up with her."
Ok, maybe they didn't have so much in common.
"Wait, so in your world, Maya's still alive?"
"Yeah. Is she not in your world?"
"No," TV Emily said as tears began to pool in her eyes. "She's not."
"Well are you dating anyone now?" Book Emily felt guilty this time, flaunting Maya in her face.
"Yeah. Paige McCullers. I love her as well."
"Paige? I don't know a Paige."
TV Emily's heart sank for like, the billionth time in the past five minutes. Paige only existed in her world.
"Well you should."
Both Emilys had come to the conclusion that they really didn't like one another. So, with a nod, they parted ways when their time came to an end.
Book Emily thought how lucky the other her was. No siblings, a sport she loved, friends, no Ali love, no baby, and a girlfriend who loved her. She wished her life was perfect. Maybe it could be though. After all, she was close to stopping A once and for all.
TV Emily thought how lucky she was compared to the book version of her. And she did NOT want to live without her friends or Paige.
And for crying out loud, the other her had a kid!
