At some point, I grew wary of the staring and the odd requests of the brothers. The sisters were a bit nicer. They urged me to find lodging elsewhere before one of their brothers turned me into their sister-in-law. I understood what they meant, but where would I go? I was an orphan with no known relatives, and all my family members gone.

Chance came in the mail one day. It was a mail from the royal palace, containing an announcement for everyone. A new king, a young one, had just been crowned, and with this came a series of celebration. For that, extra help would be needed, so it would be much appreciated if anyone would volunteer. P.S. Volunteers might have a chance to be officially hired.

I bolted out the door at the news.

That was how I became a kitchen girl. I started living with other servants as well, ones who did not have families to go back to. We squeezed together in a hut. The environment was certainly worse than back in the cottage, but I preferred it to being harassed by Biyn and his brothers.

In the middle of one night, someone tapped me on the shoulder. I sat up. "What is it?" I whispered to the girl that had tapped me.

"Somebody's asking for you, out there," she said.

"Who?"

"I don't know who, he looks handsome though." I could have sworn she winked, even though it was too dark to see.

When I stepped out of the hut, I saw none other than Biyn.

"Wow, Sigrun, look how you've grown!" was his first comment.

"What brought you here?" I asked instead.

"We're a little short on money. You've got some savings from work, right?"

I gave it to him.

"Thank you." He reached for my hand, and kissed it. "When I've saved enough, I'll get you out of here."

"It's okay, don't bother." With that, I went back inside.
