You can wait for what feels like an eternity to find someone who your so drawn to, it makes you question how you ever lived without them. They are the missing part of you that you never knew was gone, the sun to your moon. My mum never found her sun, but she had me so it never mattered to her. Caring for me and being the best mother she could was all she strived for. She was the most selfless and inspiring woman I had ever had the pleasure of knowing. Well she was.

I watched it happen. I saw the life drain from her eyes and the colour from her face. If I close my eyes I can still see her lying there in a bloody heap sprawled across the carpet. I ran to her side dropping my bags at the door and began to shake her bloody shoulders screaming for her to say something, anything, just so I would know she was okay. Whilst the last grain of life was leaving her body she smiled a gentle smile and softly whispered,"be strong my beautiful girl" and just like that she was gone...

I sat there as motionless as my mother staring at her body. I was alone. Oh so very alone. Physically and internally. Moments later my neighbour who had moved in only a few days prior to the event had heard me screaming and came to check if I was alright. She saw the blood and my mothers dead body lying in the centre of the living room. I heard her swallow then felt a comforting hand on my shoulder pulling me away from the body. She brought me into a tight embrace and continuously whispered in my ear, "it's all going to be okay," whilst rocking me back and forth. Of course I knew that was a lie but the words brought comfort to me so I collapsed into her arms.I clung to her body and pored oceans of my tears onto her itchy black jumper. After I had gotten everything out of my system she moved to grab the home telephone off the coffee table and dialled for the police. She quietly and calming told them of the situation then said "thank you" before hanging up the phone. She then knelt back down to where I was still on the floor and looked directly into my eyes. She had short cut brown hair and looked to be in her early 30's. Her eyes were as green as moss and reminded me of emeralds. Breaking the silence she cautiously asked, "what's your name baby"?
"Clarissa," I replied through shaky breaths.
"I'm Jodie," she said beginning to grab my arms and pull me to my feet. She then slipped my hand into hers and walked me out the front door.

It feels so long ago now even though it was only yesterday...
