The sun glares at me, burning me even more as I look out onto the ocean. The water looks like a blanket of diamonds, making me grin easily. Thinking of the treasure out there, my toes curl into the sand, feeling the rough texture prod me even more. My tanned, muscled arm wraps around the smooth surface of my white surfboard, giving me a rush of adrenaline for what is to come.
I jog towards the ocean, my heart thumping faster and faster as I get closer. The first splash of water hits me, a cold rush enlivening my whole body. I thrust my joy against the weight of the sea, and climb on. My wetsuit clad legs dangle in the clear blue water, as I squint at what's in front of me, looking for the perfect wave.
I start paddling, my fingers brushing against slimy seaweed, the salty air bringing my eyes to a briny mist. The waves start to look bigger and so does my smirk. I drop low onto my stomach, ready to dominate and ride the water.
The wave beneath me starts to swell, lifting my surfboard forward and up. The drop is about to happen and I pop up, my hands slamming down on the surfboard, pushing my body up, my legs swinging upwards and planting themselves onto the board. I rise like the Son of God, my hands out to steady myself, and my face smiling smugly.
Then, the drop comes.
Except, it isn't the wave falling.
It's me.
A huge unexpected wave crashes down on my back, causing me to lose balance and fall. My face slams onto the board, and the stench of metallic blood hits my nose, filling it up. It is instantly washed away as I slide off from the board, unable to latch on.
The surfboard leash binds me to the board, but it isn't on today.
I don't fall.
I normally don't.
The once clear sparkling water now seems like a dark soundless void. The slimy seaweed, wrapped around my fingers, welcomed me into the vast ocean. Now, it tangles itself around my body, dragging me down, not allowing me to escape.
