Lauren could feel the water closing up on her, she could hear it. She ran for her life. She ran as fast as her limbs would take her. She knew how the water would feel. It would feel ice cold and it would clog her lungs until she gave up. But no, she won’t give up. Her mumma had always called her a strong one. But, the water seemed stronger today. She felt it reach out and grab her. The breath left her lungs on a whoosh; she tumbled and got tossed around like a rag doll. The water was ice cold, just like she knew it would be. It was dark, her lungs screamed for some air and then she felt a hand close down on her throat, she screamed, out loud; another mistake. She took in more water, her limbs were turning cold. She was fighting hard to evade the darkness. But, nevertheless, it was closing upon her. She felt her legs go numb. The water had become comforting just like the pain in her heart. Darkness finally closed upon her, winning the battle.
Lauren woke up with a gasp. She was drenched in sweat. She was not being tossed around like a rag doll by the water. Instead, she was safe in her bed, in New York. It had been almost a year since she had had this horrendous nightmare. Well, there was a reason she had dreamt of the water tonight. It was, after all, her parent’s 16th death anniversary. It had been 16 years since the dreadful accident on the beach, 16 years since she had properly spoken to her brother, 16 years since she had lost the two people who had meant the world to her.
There was a time when she had loved the water. The beach had been her second house. Until the day, when she had swam too deep inside the sea and had almost drowned. Her parents, in efforts to save her had lost their lives. Since the day of her accident her brother, Edward, hadn’t spoken to her. He hadn’t even cried the day of the funeral. She knew that she was the reason for the death of her own parents. And that was a part of her life that she could never change. She had lost her parents and her brother, her entire world the same day.
But her brother had invited her to his wedding. He had married Lauren’s high school friend, Sophia. Edward had been married happily for quite a few years now and had been blessed with an angelic girl child, Anna. Her niece had been named after their mother, Anna Beth Davidson. But, then, there were her friends, who were everything she had lost and not had, Sharon and Parker. Sharon was now engaged to Parker’s brother, Connor. Who would’ve known! Connor, undeniably sexy and Sharon, the gorgeous Indian, are engaged! Lauren shook her head, with a smile on her face. Blood ties or not, they always made her happy and she loved them to the moon and back.
She went back to bed, comforted by the thoughts and memories that were now running through her mind.
