The city was founded on April 1, 1924, and is famous for its onsen (hot springs).

Beppu contains nine major geothermal hot spots, which are sometimes referred to as the "nine hells of Beppu". Beppu is also divided into eight major hot spring areas, listed below and known as Beppu Hatto.

Beppu is a tourist town sandwiched between the sea and the mountains.

Recently, Beppu has been undergoing an urban renewal. In 2000, the city subsidized the creation of the Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, an international university which focuses on International Relations and Business. The university has an enrollment of 5,633 students originating from 98 countries and regions,[2] making it one of the most culturally diverse universities in Japan.

 Visitor attractions

Besides the various onsen, at the edge of the city at the border with Ōita, Beppu also has an aquarium called Umi Tamago (lit. "Sea Egg" but in English "Oita Marine Palace")[3] featuring dolphins at the base of Takasaki yama (Mt. Takasaki), which is known for its large population of wild monkeys (Japanese macaques).

The city is part of the course of the annual Beppu-Ōita Marathon, which traces a path between Beppu and its neighbouring city of Ōita. The competition has been held every year since 1952 and is classed as an IAAF Silver Label road race.[4]

Since the 1980s, Beppu has had a sex museum, Beppu Hihokan, which commemorates the resort town's sex industry with waxwork exhibits. The Hihokan was founded by an aficionado of sex-related artifacts, many of which are on display.

Beppu also has a magical park. It is located only 10 minutes from Beppu Station by foot.[5]

Shidaka lake is located 600 meters above sea level.[6]

For visitors who are looking for a peaceful nature tour or non-extreme hiking trail, Otobaru Waterfall is one of the local natural attractions. The waterfall is hidden from the tourist crowd located in the peaceful mountain area of Beppu city, 20 minutes walk from Wonder Rakutenchi, a traditional amusement park.[7]

Beppu is one of Japan's most popular tourist destinations and attracts over 11 million visitors every year who come to enjoy its picturesque bayside location and famous hot springs. It is also known as the most internationally populated city in Japan with many international students and tourists. In total, there are over 2500 hot spring sites within Beppu city, and just behind Yellowstone National Park in America, Beppu is the world’s second largest source of natural hot spring water. Beppu is home to 10 out of the 11 different types of such springs that exist in the world. There are many different types of hot springs available for relaxing besides just spring water baths. Steam, sand and the world’s largest mud bath are also available.

Beppu and Oita have beautiful nature with mountains, beaches, lakes and valleys. You can enjoy swimming, fishing, diving, hiking, camping, and various outdoor sports. Japans four seasons make the scenery even more beautiful with the autumn color change of leaves and various seasonal flowers.

From zoos to amusement parks, there are many exciting attractions in and around Beppu city. These facilities are quite popular among local citizens as well as tourists.

Located on the southern island of Kyushu, Beppu has a mild climate, compared to other parts of Japan. However, you will still be able to experience the full four seasons. The maximum temperature in Beppu is around 35 degrees centigrade and the minimum temperature is around -4 degrees centigrade. August is the hottest month, February being the coldest month of the year.

Summer: July, August, September

Humidity is high. Therefore, light-weight, breathable clothing is best. Be sure to avoid sunburn in the middle of the day. August is the hottest month of the year.

Fall: October, November, December

Watch the leaves change gold and brown on the surrounding mountains. Days are still warm, but nights and mornings start to get cool.

Winter: January, February, March

Snuggle up with the heater. You might even get the chance to see snow around APU a couple of days in the winter. Temeratures can get down to as low as 3 degrees centigrade on some days, so warm weather gear such as gloves, scarfs, thick socks and a coat are required.

Spring: April, May, June

The perfect weather for watching the Cherry Blossoms "Sakura", in the park. Days start to get warmer. However watch out for the UV rays in early May when they are at their strongest. June, brings the rainy season "Tsuyu".
