Almost Home

"This is so good!'' I said as I ate my chicken nuggets. I couldn't imagine what it would be like if I had to eat hospital food. Just then Ava came back in the room.

"Aaww, aren't you lucky," she said to me. "I wish we had a Chick-fil-A here."

"When can she go home?" my mom asked.

"Well, if she is doing well now and the next time I come check on her, she may be able to go home tonight," she said. "But if she has a fever or doesn't feel well, we will want to keep her overnight.''

"Yay!" I exclaimed, because I knew I didn't have a fever.

"Well, I'll check your temperature when you are done eating. Just press the little button on the side of the bed when you are done," she said to me.

"I will," I said. I also gave her a thumbs up. Ava then left the room. I don't know why she did, because I only had like two bites left.

"Well, I have to go now," Abby said. She walked over to me. She gave me a hug and said, "Get better. I want to see you dance again." She then waved goodbye and walked out of the room.

Of course she wanted me to dance. That's all she thinks about. Dance, dance, and more dance. She just wants me to dance like Maddie.

Since I was finished, I pressed the button like Ava said. As I pressed it, she walked in the room. "Woah! How did you know I was finished?" I asked in awe.

"I just know," she replied. "Actually, Abby told me as she was leaving."

"Can I please go home? I wanna snuggle with my puppy," I said to her. I missed Maliboo, and I just wanted to lay on the couch with her for the rest of the day.

"It all depends on how your feeling and how your body is doing," she told me. "I'm not going to send you home if you have or fever or if you can't walk. Remember, you did have a pretty bad fall today."

"Oh yeah, I did," I said feeling a little stupid. "Nothing was broken or sprained, right?"

"Well," she began, "nothing was broken. However, your ankle did appear a little swollen when you arrived. The swelling has gone down quite well, but we wanted to see if it hurt you to walk before we say it's a definite sprain."

"Okay," I said confidently that it was perfectly fine, "then let me try to walk." I tried to start to get out of bed.

"Not yet Kenzie, you need rest," my mom said as she got me to sit back down.

"Your mom is right," Ava said. "I want to check your vitals real quick too before we try to walk." She put the thermometer in my mom and waited for it to beep. "No fever Mackenzie," she said as she smiled. She then put a blood pressure cuff on my arm and put another bandaid like thing on my finger. After checking everything, she said that everything looked good.

"So I can go home?" I asked again.

"It looks like you can," Ava said. "We do need to see about that ankle though."

I was so happy I almost jumped out of the bed. I sat up and dangled my feet off the side of the bed. I slowly put my good foot on the ground, followed by my not so good foot. Pain shot up into my ankle the second I put weight on it. I began to fall when Maddie quickly helped to support me. I almost started crying. "It hurts a lot," I told Ava.

"I thought it would," she said. She and Maddie helped me back into the bed. "I'm going to go get the ER doctor to come take a look."

"I kinda forgot we were in the ER this whole time," Chloe said to Christi.

"Chloe! Clara is still with the neighbor," Christi said suddenly. "Your dad won't be home for a while. We need to go get her before she causes them anymore trouble."

"Can I stay?" Chloe asked.

My mom looked at Christi. "I can bring her by on our way home. Or if we're here late she can spend the night. Tomorrow is Sunday, so there's no school."

"That.s fine," Christi replied, "just keep in touch Chloe."

"I will mom," she replied. Christi then walked out of the room.

'Well,' I thought, 'I was almost home.'
