The Subject marker- 이is used when the subject word ends with a consonant.
Where as - 가 is for those who ends with a vowel.
Examples:
Subject Predicate
이구두 -----------가------편안해요
These shoes are comfortable
(In this example the subject marker 가 is used because the Subject 구두 "gudu" ends with a Vowel)
Subject Predicate
외국사람-----------이-------읏으세요
The Foreigner is Laughing
(In this Exmaple The Subject Marker 아 is used because the subject 외국사람 "Weguksaram" ends with a consonant.)
