After an hour of travelling, Sonia alighted at Kent Ridge MRT all the way from Bedok, and headed to the Faculty of Law in National University of Singapore (NUS).
Sonia wasn't used to long travelling hours, as she's been studying in Meridian Junior College 2 years ago, which was only one bus ride away. She was nervous and excited at the same time, she can't wait to visit the NUS Student Union's booth.
She was amazed with all the achievements of the Student Union, and the programmes that the committee members planned. What really captivated her in the booth was when the Student Leader shared that being a member of the Student Union, she gets to plan student camps and activities for student development, in addition, they get to go overseas as well!
Sonia thought that it would be an effective way for her to not only develop her portfolio, but also to fulfil her passion, which was serving others fervently.
She took a glance at her phone, "3:18pm". Just as she was about to rush off for her weekly Ballet lessons, a friendly Student Leader handed her a CCA Brochure, "Do attend our interview!".
Sonia could already hear voices of demons outside the studio, "Oh my gosh... Our black swan is here." She tried to avoid eye contact with the other dancers...
During practice, Sonia tripped on her pointe many times, and her pirouette was very unstable. Her classmate's mockery caused her attention to waver. Her instructor eventually exploded, "Why are you so bad at this? Why are you so stiff?"
As she holds her tears with her head down, staring at her bruised feet, she muttered "I can do it". She forced herself to become a better dancer, but she's just too inflexible and clumsy.
"Therefore, I feel that I am able to contribute significantly to the student body, and improve the lives of NUS students..."
The seniors seemed impressed, Sonia heaved a sigh of relief, she knew that she did well for the interview.
At the same time, she was impatiently staring at her watch, she knew she was going to be late for her ballet lesson.
After 3 minutes of discussion, Sonia was invited back into the interview room, "We would like to invite you to our Student Union Recruitment Camp".
The seniors emphasized that she must attend this camp, otherwise there will be no more opportunities for her to join the Student Union.
"How was lesson today? Ms Jasmine told me you were late. What's going on? Too much work for a law student is it?"
Sonia didn't know how to reply her mother; she knew that her mother wouldn't be happy to know about her plans to join the Student Union.
Sonia replied with her usual phrase, "It was good, and I'm okay, Mummy..."
Mr Chua rolled his eyes, "Can you stop interrogating her as if she's a criminal?" He turned to Sonia, and asked how was her interview.
Sonia's mother was furious, she stood up and slammed the dining table hard "SONIA CHUA HUI YU".
She begins to rant with rage, she was incensed by the fact that Sonia skipped her ballet lessons for a stupid interview.
Sonia tried to explain to her mother that she really wants to be in the Student Union, but her mother just wouldn't listen.
