Chapter Two
I left Shaylee's house around noon, getting into my black Ford truck. It's one of the things I truly love, and it's always been there for me. As long as I take care of it, it will be mine.
I open my purse to get out my keys, brushing my straight brown hair over my shoulder. I pause by the car door to search some more, digging past discarded postcards, a stray condom, makeup, some loose change, and various lip balms. I couldn't find them anywhere.
"Are you fucking kidding me."
I turn on my heel and head back to Shaylee's when I'm almost knocked flat by a familiar feeling. That very same feeling of safety from my dream hit me like a wave, and my steps faltered. I look around to make sure my surroundings haven't changed to a mysterious forest setting. They haven't. Whoa.
"Excuse me," a male voice says. "I think you dropped these."
I whirl around to see a lean, tanned and muscular boy standing with my keys carelessly hanging from his fingertips, right in the spot I was standing not a few moments ago. The sight of him startled me. I could've swore that I had not seen anyone on the deserted street.
"Uh... Yeah. Thanks." I closed the distance between us, and as I walked up to him to retrieve my car keys I noticed something: his eyes were a lovely shade of brown... And red.
"Well, here they are." His voice was beautiful. Melting honey. It didn't help my case that I was standing there, staring at him. I mentally shook myself.
"Thanks a lot... I don't know what I would've done if I couldn't find those. Or if they had been stolen. Where'd you come from, by the way? I swear there was nobody around when I came out."
"No problem," his voice made me shiver "and just nowhere."
"If you told me, you'd have to kill me, right?" I said with lame humor.
"Something like that." He said with a wink. A wink! This gorgeous boy winked at me! With those weirdly beautiful eyes, too. I couldn't look away. He handed me my keys.
"Thanks aga-"
CRACK!
He threw himself at me, pushing both of us to the pavement. I started to complain and push him off of me when he silenced me. Angered, I pushed harder. He gave me a daggered look, then slowly pointed to the other side of the street; to the source of the previous loud noise. What I saw I couldn't comprehend.
Four creatures, four gruesome things, stood on the curb. They were like people, but with fur. Fur! Matted, greasy, and unnatural. They wore T-shirts and jeans, but their arms and faces showed the hair. Doglike faces protruded from their necks. All of then hunched, all of them terrifying, all of them looking pissed the fuck off. I screamed. This could not be real.
All of them looked back towards my truck. I saw the bigger of the four take a baseball bat and slam it into the curb, making the same cracking noise as before. They all let out terrible howls and sprinted in our direction.
I stared in wide-eyed fear, laying on the cement next to some guy with beautiful eyes.
