Chapter 3 - Getting to Know You
Hurry up.
Hunter texts me and I groan.
Keep your pants on! I'll get there when I get there! Why couldn't you just walk over here? He lives one street away from me! I'm coming out here just to pick you up you know, so be grateful and don't complain!
I bark my text to Siri and tell her to send it for me. God, Hunter gets on my nerves sometimes.
Someone is getting irritated. What's up w/ u?
I read his text at a stoplight and sigh. He's right. I'm getting because I have no idea how to act when I see Evan again and I'm anxious.
Sorry. I'll tell you when I get there.
I send it and take a deep breath to calm myself. I pull up to Hunter's house and don't even make it onto the driveway before he jumps into my car. I glance at him, wearing straight blue jeans that accent his slim, yet noticeably built figure, with a Red Hot Chili Peppers shirt to top it off. The black shirt with the red logo of the band makes the red in his russet hair stand out and bring out the bronze tone of his skin.
"You didn't bring a jacket. It'll get cold out in the forest by the time it becomes evening." I say, my sisterly side coming out.
"The forest?" He asks, confused.
"Oh!" I exclaim. "I forgot to tell you, we moved the location to this shack that I own in the forest."
He gives me a quizzical look. "Why didn't I know this? Does Evan?"
I think about whether I should tell him or not, and decide I might as well. He's my best friend for a reason. He could probably give you some advice on Evan too, considering they used to be best friends, mini me points out wisely. I look at the clock on the dash and see that we have thirty minutes until we have to meet at the park near the edge of the trees. "Let's go inside. We have a lot of time, thanks to your impatience."
He nods once, understanding my meaning and heads back into his house with me at his heels. Walking in, Mrs. Adams says, "Hello Cici, nice to see you again. What's wrong? I thought you kids were going to do an art project?"
Before Hunter can say anything, I answer up. "Hi Mrs. Adams. It's nice to see you too. I just came a bit early so we're going to wait here until it's time to leave. Is that alright with you?" I ask using my sweet voice.
"No, no! Of course it's alright." She answers as she always does when it comes to me. I'm like the daughter she never had, and I know she savors that since she has three boys. I'm so bad for taking advantage of her.
I nod my thanks and nudge Hunter up the stairs until we reach his room. I see his second eldest brother, Mark. We exchange greetings and I rush into Hunter's room before he can start teasing us about being more than friends and making Hunter pissed.
Once inside his room, I shut the door behind me and lean against it. I wait until he has gotten his jacket on and is sitting down before spilling my guts about what happened with Evan. I explain my conflicting feelings and eventually, ask him what he thinks about the whole situation.
"Hmmm..." He thinks for a moment. "Why didn't you show me the shack before Evan?" He asks and I groan.
"It was just a spur of the moment thing! I never really thought to tell you about it. I mean, it was just a place for me that I could go to whenever I wanted to just clear my mind and then I got locked out of my house and I just thought, 'time to go to my other house. I'll bring the tag along.' You know that had you been there, I would have taken you instead. Just, not as a date."
