"Where are you!?" Hailie Jade's shrill voice echoes through the phone line as the taxi driver takes a rushed turn and I'm slammed against the window of the tiny car. My cheek hits the window with a audible smack, and I fumble to regain my balance, pushing myself away from the window twice as fast as I hit it. Grasping the cell phone into my hands, I frown at the driver who continues to speed down the worn streets of Michigan.. I'm about to shout a rude remark his way, but I decide to keep my mouth shut, for Hailie's sake.
"I'm on my way, Hai! I'll be there in about-" I bring the phone from my ear and click the screen before continuing. ".. Six minutes, tops."
"Six minutes!?" She shrieks, causing a numbing pain to shoot throughout my right ear drum. "I'm about to go on stage and get crowned in two, please hurry!" She begs, her voice going lower in a worried tone. I sigh.
"Hailie Jade Mathers, listen to me sister.. I'll be there, okay? Now push that pretty little head of yours up, your tiaras going to fall off." I say quickly, a smile coming onto my lips as I envision the dress we picked out about a week ago, and the tiara her mother bought her weeks before sitting on top of her head as she goes onto the stage with a proud grin. She deserves this, its her dream and she deserves every once of attention she will get today.. She's going to be homecoming queen, after all.
"I seriously love you, Autumn." She replies, making my smile grow even larger. God, I love this girl like you wouldn't believe; I'm the proudest human being on the planet to be able to call her my best friend. I'm going to be at that ceremony if it's the last thing I do. I'm going to make it..
"I love you too, Hailie. Now sit tight, I'll be there. Talk to you soon." And with that, I hang up the phone and lean forward towards the glass window between the taxi driver and I. Not thinking twice I knock on the window, he looks into the mirror and raises a questioning eyebrow.
I inhale deeply.
"Step on it."
