Surprises

I sneak another glance at the clock, anxiety eating away at my nerves.

    Any minute now.

I stuff my shaking hands under my thighs. My breathing comes out in ragged, short little puffs of air, and he's not even here yet. What the hell is wrong with me? Sienna Lane doesn't do nervous. I'm not a nervous person. Just isn't in my genes. But right now I feel like all the times I should've been nervous are catching up to me.

    Karma's a bitch.

I stand up from my perch on the arm of the couch, because I have to do something, anything, or I'll go completely crazy. I settle for pacing across the living room, my bare feet making agonizingly loud little slaps on the hardwood floor.

    My watch beeps.

    Five minutes.

Five minutes until he comes home.

Five minutes until I make or break the rest of my life.

The seconds seem to crawl by. I'm this close to tearing my hair out when I hear a key turning in the lock.

    He's here.

I rush back onto the couch and try to look as casual as possible. And when he walks into the room, I can feel some of the tension drain out of my body. Maybe this won't be so bad.

I stand up and wrap my arms around his waist. "Hey," I breathe against his button-up shirt. I linger a few seconds longer than I should, just inhaling his crisp scent. It's calming.

He presses a kiss to my hair. "Hey, Lucky." His voice is tired. He must've had a long day of classes.

"How was your day?" I ask, the picture of nonchalance. "Everything all right?"

Kayden shrugs off his bag and runs a hand through his hair. He exhales loudly, releasing some seriously pent-up exhaustion. "Fine, I guess. Finals are a fucking nightmare. I just want to sleep." He sighs and flops on the couch. "Maybe forever."

I laugh slightly, but it's insincere. I can literally feel the elephant in the room weighing everything down.

Grow some balls, Si. It's now or never.

    "Uh... well... I, uh..."

What the fuck are you doing? Speak, you dumb ass!

Kayden stands up and walks over to me, crossing his arms in concern. "Are you okay, Sienna?" His gray eyes shine with worry, and I hate that I'm doing this to him.

"Uh, yeah. I'm totally fine. Why do you ask that?" I say, averting my eyes ever so slightly.

"Oh please, Sienna. Don't bullshit me," he snaps, but there's no anger in his tone. "You stayed home this morning because you said you weren't feeling well, and it's the last week of finals. The Lucky I know wouldn't do that. And now you're acting all fidgety. What gives?"

Damn him for knowing me so well.

"I think I may have the stomach flu," I lie, casting him a small smile. "And, well-"

My stomach lurches, and I immediately throw a hand over my mouth.

Kayden's eyes bulge. "Oh shit, Lucky, are you-"

I don't hear the rest of his sentence because in half a second I'm hunched over the toilet, retching my brains out. A tear slips down my cheek, because my throat burns so bad it feels like it's on fire. And then Kayden's hand is there, rubbing soothing circles into my back, and everything feels okay, at least for a moment.

"No," I rasp, coughing up more bile. "I...don't want you... to see me like this."

"I don't give a rat's ass what you want right now, Sienna. I have to make sure you're okay."

I roll my eyes and wipe my mouth with the back of my hand before flushing the toilet. Lightly brushing Kayden's arm off of me, I move to grab my toothbrush and the toothpaste and begin scrubbing at my teeth.

When I'm done, I start to exit the bathroom before my eyes catch something on the edge of the sink. I grab it conspicuously and push past Kayden back to the living room.

"Lucky, I'm so sorry. I didn't realize that you were actually sick," Kayden explains hurriedly, wringing his hands in guilt.

    I take a deep breath.

"Kayden, it's more than that." I look directly into his eyes, searching for any signs of him contemplating running away from me. Again.

Instead, he looks confused. "What are you talking about?"

I suck in a huge gulp of air and clench it even tighter in my fist. It's now or never.

    "Kayden."

He looks at me, his face painted with worry and concern. "Lucky, what's going on?"

And I finally step off the cliff.

"I'm pregnant," I whisper, thrusting the positive pregnancy test in his direction.

    Silence.

Oh shit, I knew it. He's gonna leave again, he's going to run away, he's going to-

The biggest smile of all smiles explodes on Kayden's face, brightening his features. Tears leak from his eyes and that's all it takes before I start sobbing too.

But the tears are far from being those of sadness.

These are tears of pure joy.

Kayden is in front of me in one long stride, sweeping me into his arms and swinging me in a full circle before setting me down and pressing a long, loving kiss to my lips.

A bubbly laugh escapes from my throat and slides into his mouth, causing him to laugh as well. "I can't believe it. This is amazing, Sienna!" He smiles brightly and does something so completely and utterly Kayden I laugh even harder.

He throws open the door of our apartment and yells, at the top of his lungs, "I'M GONNA BE A FUCKING FATHER!"

I giggle again before running over to him and yelling, "I'M GONNA BE A MOTHER!"

Kayden smiles down at me. He kneels on the ground and presses a kiss to the slight mound beginning to form on my belly. "I love you, and I love you so much, you hear me?" he breathes against the fabric of my tank top. "And I will do everything in my power to keep you safe, understand? You take care of your mother, too." He stands up and envelops me in a tight embrace. "Because she will be the most amazing mother a child could ask for."

I smile as more tears start to fall. "Are you sure?"

He looks down on me and kisses my forehead. "Damn straight."

    "We can do this, right?"

We both smile goofily at each other before answering.

    "Damn straight."
