Artemis POV.
"Why mom? Why can't I just come with you?" I asked looking my mom right in the eyes. "Because it is too dangerous, and I don't want to put you in any danger." my mom said as she puts her hands on my shoulders. "But it is about me, why can't I just come?" I asked and looked down at the ground. "Because he wants you. I'm not going to give him what he wants. I'm not doing that mistake again." my mom said and lifted my chin up calmly, so our eyes connected. "But..." I stopped what I was going to say. I got tears in my eyes, when I thought of the last time I saw my dad. "Just be careful." I said and hugged her. It didn't take long until she hugged me back. "As soon this is over I'm coming back to you." she said as she hugged me. I broke the hug and looked at her. I could feel the tears I tried to hold back, had started to drain down to my chin. "Promise?" "I promise." she said with a sweet smile.
We got in the car. After some time with silences I spoke again. "Where will I be staying?" "A friend of mine." she answered. "And where dose this friend lives?" I asked and looked at her. "Brooklyn" she said still facing the road. "But mom..." I didn't get to finish before my mom spoke. "No but, it is the safest for you if you get out of Philadelphia. He known that we live there." she said a bit seriously. "If he knows that we live in Philadelphia why hasn't he done anything until now?" I asked a bit irritated. "I don't know how that man thinks, but maybe he has just been waiting for the proper time." she said. I stopped asking after that and instead I looked out the window. Why now, what is so special about now? I asked myself.
Time skip to Brooklyn
The drive took about 1 hour and 55 minutes. We didn't talk much, but I have been thinking a lot. "Who is this friend of yours?" I asked when we crossed the town line. "Gabriel West. I met him while I was working." she said with a small smile. "And what was you working on?" I asked. "A mission, nothing big." she said. My mom doesn't like to talk about her job so much, and I respect that. So, I let it be. "Can you tell something about this Mr. West?" I asked. "Well, he is in his 40 and has a son. How is one that same age you are." she said and smiled. "Does he know why I'm staying at him for who knows how long?" I asked. "All he knows is that I'm working at that he was the only one that could look over for you. And he said that you could stay as long it takes to finish what I'm working on." she said. "So, he knows what you work as?" I asked a bit surprised that he know that. "He knows because he works as a police man. And I had to ask him some questions last time I was here. That's we met." she said. After that it became quiet between us. So, I turned my head and watched on the widow again.
We drove up to a midsize white house with dark grey roof. It had two floors. The outside was really pretty. Stone brick road that went from the main road and up to the garage and a small road that went to the door. There were some trees here and there. But not too many.
We got out of the car and went over to the door. "Try to be nice to them." my mom said before she knocked the door. I gave her a nod and a small smile. It didn't take long until someone opened the door. The one who opened the door had dark brown hair with dark brown eyes. He was wearing a blue shirt and brown pants with some dark blue shoes. "It's good to see you again Gabriel." my mom said with a smile on her face. "It is good to see you again too." Gabriel said and smiled back. Gabriel stepped to the side to let us in.
We all walked in to the living room and sat down on the couch. "So, this is your daughter?" Gabriel asked. "Yes, this is Artemis." my mom said and looked at me. I looked at my feet just because I don't want to make eye contact with anyone. "I think Carter will be happy to make a new friend. Carter is my son." Gabriel said. "Where does he now?" my mom asked. Why did she just ask that? I thought to myself. "He is till at school. He will come home about an hour." Gabriel said as he looked at his watch.
Time skip one hour later
My mom had left for 30 minutes ago. I was sitting in the room that was going to be mine for who knows how long. But it isn't a bad room, it is a nice room. Dark brown wood floor with light grey walls. A light brown wardrobe, a midsize bed in the middle of the room against the wall. In one of the corners there is some chairs. On one wall was a widow that was facing the back part of the house, so I could see trees on trees for mils. Also known to be a forest.
There was a knock on the door and Gabriel was standing in the door. I already know what he wanted, Carter was home. He told me that he will knock on the door when he got home. So, I walked with Gabriel to the living room again. A boy with short dark brown hair that that stopped just above his light green eyes. He didn't look anything like his father, only the hair colour was the same nothing else.
"Carter this is Artemis Lock. She is going to stay with us for a while." Gabriel said as soon as I stepped into the living room. Carter stood up and walked over to me. After some seconds he was right in front of me. He was half a head higher than me. He stretched out his hand and I hesitated a little before I took his and shook it. He gave me a soft small smile and took his hand to himself. "It will be nice having you here." Carter said and waited a bit before going back to the couch. I just stood there before I walked back to ''my'' room.
"What is wrong with you Artemis? You shouldn't be here and risk this peoples life." I said to myself as I walked to the bed. I sat down and just looked out the window. "Please hurry mom, I don't want to hurt this people."
