Zayn looked around at his large array of toys and pursed his lips, trying to think of what he wanted to play with more. He almost immediately spotted his blocks, and he crawled toward them quickly, only to stop once he felt arms grab him around his middle and pull him up. He frowned a bit and cuddled against Liam's shoulder, looking back at his toys longingly. "Play..."
"You can play, baby. You just have to do it in your playpen, alright?" Liam cooed, kissing his cheek and scooping up the blocks. Zayn was especially accident prone, and he didn't want him getting hurt when he couldn't pay attention to him. "I think Niall and Louis are going to be here in a few minutes! They can play with you while I'm gone."
"Gone?" Zayn repeated, his frown growing even more prominent. "No go."
Things had gotten pretty serious in their relationship - which, honestly, wasn't a dating kind of relationship like most people thought. They had been best mates for years, and when Zayn came to him and confessed his love of ageplay, Liam told him he would be delighted to be a daddy. He took care of every single need and had absolutely no complaints. His other mates were perfectly alright with it as well. Louis being Louis had to try and improve things, though, and he had been trying to convince Liam to go on a date with a secret friend of his. After weeks of pestering, he had finally accepted. He had to talk to Zayn out of his headspace, but even he agreed that it was a good idea. It was dealing with little Zayn that was going to be the problem.
Liam didn't respond, instead setting Zayn down in his playpen and kissing the top of his head. "Go ahead and play, baby. I'll be right upstairs. If you need me just call, alright?"
Zayn didn't respond, and when Liam turned back to him worriedly, he found the other lad already chewing on one of the soft blocks and reaching for the others to begin stacking. He smiled softly and hurried upstairs, knowing he was going to be late if he didn't get a move on.
"Daddy!"
Liam's eyes widened, and before he had a chance to think of the possibilities of what could happen to his baby, he was already there and cuddling Zayn back into his arms. "What do you need, love? What's wrong? Are you hurt?"
Zayn looked up with golden eyes only slightly glossed over with tears. "Juice pwease?"
A sigh left Liam's lips, and he kissed Zayn's cheek and started toward the kitchen. "Yeah, baby. You can have some juice."
It didn't seem like much at first, but by the time Louis and Niall had arrived ten minutes later, Liam still hadn't been able to get ready. If Zayn wasn't asking for more juice, he was in need of a change, or falling down and accidentally bumping his knee, which everyone knew would require a kiss to make it better. Liam hadn't even attempted to go back upstairs after so much running back and forth.
The first one to walk into the kitchen was Louis, and the very second his eyes fell on Liam filling up Zayn's sippy cup for the third time, he simply gaped. "Mate, you do know you're late, right?"
Liam groaned, holding Zayn close as he set the cup back into his hands. "I know, but Zayn is so needy tonight! Maybe I shouldn't go."
"You're going." Louis stated. Before he or Zayn could utter a single word, he had the younger lad scooped up into his arms and set on his hip. "What do you say, Zaynie? Are you ready to play with Uncle Ni and me?"
Zayn's eyes widened, and he looked between his Daddy and Louis with a shy frown. "No... Daddy stay."
"Daddy has to go, baby. Only for a few hours, okay?" Niall spoke up, running his fingers through the baby's hair. "Maybe if you're really really really good we can have some ice cream, how about that? And we can put oreos on it and syrup and we won't tell Daddy." He winked, and that finally made Zayn smile. He reached for Niall, nearly forgetting that Liam was about to leave him with his uncles. "I bet I can draw a prettier picture than you."
"No!"
"Race you?" Niall chuckled, placing him down onto the floor. Zayn giggled and ran toward the playroom despite Liam's calling for him to be careful not to slip. The poor thing would probably hit a wall or something and get a bloody nose. It wouldn't be the first time.
Louis' arm slung over Liam's shoulders, and in no time, they were heading up the stairs together to finish getting Liam ready. This was one thing he wasn't going to let him miss because of having a baby at home. On the other hand, Liam was fretting, practically running back and forth and then listening for any sign of distress from Zayn. There wasn't any, but he still had a knot in his stomach from the worry he was feeling. "Maybe some other night, Louis..."
"You're worse than Zayn, Liam," Louis tutted, fixing his hair as he pouted into the mirror. "It's going to be fine. He needs to get used to you leaving him for a bit. It isn't like he hasn't been babysat before."
"But he doesn't like me leaving him, you know that! He'll keep crying and he could make himself sick-"
"Not one more word, Payne. You are going to go downstairs and say goodbye to Zayn, and then get your arse right into the car and drive to your date. I promise to call you if there are any problems."
Liam breathed out a small sigh. He knew he was right. He checked one more time to make sure he looked nice, and then he nodded and started down the stairs, Louis trailing a few feet behind him. Soft giggles rang in from the playroom along with the occasional small word from Zayn or teasing from Niall. The blonde was practically a child himself at times, but that was one of the reasons he was so ideal. He always knew how to handle Zayn when he was upset or bored. The scene of the two laying on the floor and drawing pictures was too precious, but Liam knew it wouldn't be like that for long. He would have left if it weren't for the fact that Zayn would get even more upset without a goodbye.
"Zee, come here, sweetie." Liam cooed, kneeling down. Zayn quickly crawled into his arms and wrapped his arms around Liam's neck as he was lifted up. "Daddy has to go now. Give kisses?"
Zayn's face absolutely fell. Not only was he upset, but he was also disappointed in himself for completely forgetting why Liam and Niall were there in the first place. "No go... Daddy stay."
"Daddy can't stay tonight. I'll be back in a few hours, though. Even before your bedtime so we can read a story together and have a bottle like usual, hm?"
While still upset, the promise Liam would be back before bedtime definitely cheered Zayn up, and he finally nodded while clinging onto and wrinkling Liam's shirt. As he always did when they had to say goodbye, he leaned up and pressed a kiss to Liam's cheek. Liam smiled and did the same to him, then pecked his lips and set him back on his feet.
"Are you going to be a good boy?"
Zayn giggled. "Good, Daddy. Zee good!'
"Good!" Liam cooed, grinning brightly. Louis elbowed him in the ribs, and with a huff, he finally waved goodbye. "Make me a pretty picture!" He called, being interrupted when he was pushed out of the door by his best mate. Louis wouldn't have let him back in no matter what.
"Have fun on your date!" The older grinned, waving and shutting the door behind him. Liam was pretty sure he even locked it for emphasis, but he couldn't be sure. He rubbed his hands over his eyes and prayed that Zayn would be okay without him for a few hours, and with that, he pulled out of the garage and started off toward the restaurant.
~
Much to Liam's surprise, he had the time of his life with his date, Harry. They hit it off immediately and were not only laughing, but also telling stories and even holding hands during dinner. They took the date from the restaurant to the streets, stopping in an ice cream parlor and then simply wandering around, hand in hand, still captivated by the other. Liam had to repeatedly make mental notes of their new memories and promise himself to thank Louis immensely for setting him up with someone so perfect. It was a shame when they had to go their separate ways, Harry to his half empty flat, and Liam to what was probably a very distraught baby boy. They promised to text as soon as they got home and had to resist the urge to sneak a first kiss as they drove in opposite directions.
He had hardly walked in the door when he was met with an ecstatic Louis. "How did it go? Are you in love? Did you two kiss?"
"Louis, bloody hell, mate. Let me see my baby and then I'll give you all of the details."
Remarkably, he had made it home just two minutes from Zayn's bedtime. He smiled brightly when he spotted Zayn on Niall's lap, nearly asleep but struggling to stay awake. Zayn's eyes immediately landed on Liam's chocolate brown ones, and he let out a gasp and raised his arms. "Daddy! Daddy!"
"Hi honey!" Liam grinned, lifting him and twirling him around. "Did you have fun? Were you a good boy?"
"Good boy!" Zayn chirped, leaning forward to pepper his cheek with sloppy kisses. "See picture?"
"Sure. I would love to see your picture. We can even hang it up on the fridge if you'd like."
Zayn beamed and scurried off to retrieve his recent masterpiece, which was nothing more than scribbles when he was in his headspace. Liam still loved it just as much as any beautiful painting he did when he was big. While he was away, he took the opportunity to sit beside Niall and ask him a serious question. "Was he good? Really?"
Niall chuckled and stretched out his legs. "He always is. He was upset when you left, but we watched Lilo and Stitch and he cheered right back up. No timeouts or corner time or spankings. He was just a little angel."
Liam's heart swelled at the thought. Zayn didn't normally misbehave, and if he did, there was usually a reason behind it. He messed up and threw tantrums now and then, but it was part of being a baby. He couldn't help it anymore than Liam could help change the weather.
The rest of the night went by easily, with Liam taking care of Zayn and putting him to bed before spilling all of the juicy details of the date to Louis and Niall. Louis, of course, was completely proud of himself for playing matchmaker and putting them together, and Liam just rolled his eyes and shoved him, though he did thank him more than once. It was the best date he had ever been on. His two mates finally left, and the last thing he remembered before going to bed was the text he received from Harry asking for another date the next night.
Liam said yes and easily fell asleep, dreaming about his curly-haired crush and the second date they were going to be on. He couldn't wait.
~
Zayn wasn't happy that Liam was leaving him again. Liam literally had to spend the whole day with him just so he wouldn't sob when he left, but even then it was a struggle to get out of the door. Promises to be back before bedtime were made and broken half of the time, thanks to he and Harry getting too caught up and losing track of time. It wasn't something Zayn was taking lightly.
It had been two weeks since the first date, and by then, Zayn was starting to expect Liam leaving him. Liam placed a kiss on top of his head and shrugged on his jacket. "See you soon, baby!"
Niall reached down to pick Zayn up from his spot on the floor, but the very second he did, he let out a piercing cry. "No! No want uncles!" He squirmed out of Niall's grasp and pushed his hands away when he attempted to try to comfort him. "Daddy need love me 'gain."
Liam stopped right in his tracks, his head snapping around as he heard his baby's words. "Zee..." He whispered, stooping down beside him and stroking his hair. "I still love you... why would you think that I didn't?"
"No stay! No want Zee." Zayn sobbed, bringing his knees up to his chest and burying his face in them. "Daddy no want Zee."
In the year since they had began, Liam had never seen Zayn so absolutely shattered by something that he had done. He felt tears prick at his own eyes, and almost instantly Zayn was in his lap, being rocked and rubbed and anything else so that he could possibly be comforted. Liam whispered soothing words into his ears and tried to tell him how much he loved him, but his voice started cracking on every other word despite how hard he tried to keep it steady. "Daddy's so sorry, baby. Daddy didn't mean it. I love you very much, Zayn, you know I would never abandon you..."
Zayn carefully looked up, tears still steadily dripping from his eyes down to his chin. "B-But leave, leave lots and no love Zee!"
How could he have made such a stupid mistake? He was so smitten with Harry that he had damn near forgotten he had a baby to take care of. Pure guilt ran through his veins as he tightened his grip and kissed all over Zayn's face to help dry his tears. "I made a terrible mistake. You know how you make mistakes sometimes? Well daddies make mistakes too, and I've made a big one. You forgive me, right?"
Zayn sniffled and paused for a moment, trying to process the words that were no doubt difficult for him. "Daddy stay?"
"Yes, love, Daddy will stay. He's going to stay with you for a while." Liam promised, continuing to rock him as they both started to calm down. He typed out a quick text to Harry with one hand, telling him that he couldn't go out because of a family emergency. Instead of lying about what was going on, he just promised to talk to him later and set his phone to the side, only wanting to focus on his upset baby boy for a long, long time. No boyfriend should come between them. He dismissed Louis and Niall but thanked them immensely anyway, and when he and Zayn were left alone, he set out for everything he needed to make things up to him.
Approximately ten minutes later, Zayn was in his Power Rangers onesie and a clean nappy, his favorite dummy between his lips and a fluffy blue blanket covering his shoulders. A bowl of popcorn was set between them, and Tarzan was just beginning to play on the screen as Liam dimmed the lights and cuddled his baby close. "I'm so sorry, Zayn."
"S'okay, Daddy. Love." Zayn hummed in response, pressing a kiss to his cheek and cuddling into his lap. Maybe it wasn't the way Liam had planned to spend his evening, but thanks to Zayn, he had finally seen how lacking he had been as a daddy the past few weeks. Nobody could replace his Zaynie, not even a beautiful green-eyed boy with long legs and a beautiful laugh.
Nope. Not even him.
~
"I just don't get it," Liam heard Harry sigh. He bit down on his lip and ran his fingers through his short quiff nervously. He had been dreading this conversation for days now. It was his fault they were having it at all, but he couldn't help but keep Zayn a secret from his new boyfriend. How would you tell someone that you have a baby - who is really twenty - and still needs twenty-four/seven care? It just couldn't be done in any way that wouldn't result in Harry either laughing or heading for the hills. He couldn't win.
"I know, Haz... I'm sorry I can't explain, but please just take my word for it. You wouldn't understand."
A few moments went by where nobody said anything, and then finally, Harry sighed again. "I'm your boyfriend, Li. If you can't tell me what's preventing us from seeing each other, I don't think we should be together."
Liam's face crumpled. Zayn squirmed a little in his arms, but he didn't wake up, which was probably for the best. His fingers carded through dark hair as he processed those words. He couldn't lose Harry, not after he found someone so utterly perfect for him. He had to take a chance. "I'll explain everything, Harry," He finally whispered, biting his lip. "I'll text you the address and you can stop by, if you want? About half an hour?" Zayn would be down for a nap by then and he would have just enough time to explain.
"Sure, babe. See you then." Harry mumbled, hanging up quickly. Liam threw his phone off to the side in dismay. Zayn squirmed once again, but this time, his eyes opened and met Liam's with a sleepy pout.
"Daddy?"
"Yeah, babe?"
Zayn curled up under his neck and closed his eyes, clutching Liam's shirt between his fingers. "Love you."
"I love you too." Liam promised, rubbing his back. As much as he wanted to just lay there and relax, he knew that Harry would be there soon, and by then he should at least be out of his pajamas. He carried Zayn to his own room and, after making sure he was still dry, set him in his crib with everything he needed to be comfortable. He had his favorite blanket, his stuffed puppy, and his dummy all in reach. He placed a soft kiss on his forehead and locked the bars into place, then went to get ready for Harry's arrival.
He didn't think he had ever been so nervous in his life. He had good reason, of course, but that didn't mean he didn't want the fluttering in his stomach to go away. If Harry denied Zayn, he was denying him. All he could do was hope that everything eventually turned out okay. It usually did in the end.
Harry arrived a few minutes late, giving Liam a few extra moments to attempt to straighten up the flat. He moved a few of Zayn's toys into the playroom and basically just tried keeping things where they belonged for once. It was hard to do with a two-year-old, but he tried.
"Hey, Haz," He smiled nervously, letting the younger lad in. Harry tossed a reassuring smile back, but Liam still felt as if he might faint then and there. "Do you want anything to drink or...?"
Harry shook his head. "I just want to know what's going on."
"Right..." Liam nodded toward the living room, and once there, they took seats on opposite couches. "I... I have a... er, baby." He bit his lip and took note of Harry's surprise. He didn't seem to be angry; in fact, he actually smiled even bigger. There was no doubt in his mind that that would soon fall. "His name's Zayn. He was upset about me leaving, and I just hated seeing him cry, but I didn't know how to tell you..."
"You thought I would break up with you because you had a kid." Harry concluded, cutting Liam off. When Liam nodded, he sighed softly. "I wouldn't do that. I'd love to meet him."
"He's not, like, normal." Liam started. That was how he fell into the full story of meeting Zayn for the first time when they were only kids, how he had come to him because his ex thought he was disgusting for wanting to be treated like he was little, and how he had been taking care of him ever since he first made his promise. Harry didn't interrupt once, only listened throughout the whole thing, not wanting to miss a single detail. When Liam had finished, he had to take a moment to let it all sink in.
"Well... that's different." Harry agreed, pursing his lips. While Liam's heart continued to race, he stared down at the floor and tried to decide how he felt about it. Maybe it wasn't too bad. It wasn't something he would have ever thought about, but Liam made sense when he spoke, and it wouldn't be fair if he didn't give him a chance. He didn't want to lose his boyfriend just because of... well, whatever he called this.
Liam was still waiting for a definite answer when he heard a yell from upstairs. Running his fingers through his hair, he stood up and raised an eyebrow at Harry. "I'll be right back." He didn't wait for a response and headed for the stairs, hurrying up to Zayn's nursery where he could hear small whimpers and cries. "Zee, baby, I'm right here." He whispered, flicking on the light and hurrying to pick him up out of the crib. "Daddy's here, love. I'm right here."
"Daddy," Zayn gurgled back, sniffling and grasping his shirt. "Daddy..."
Liam held him and rocked him, pacing around the room and lightly rubbing his back. It didn't take very long for Zayn to calm down again, and by then he figured it was safe to set Zayn down for a moment. He lay him down on the changing table and tried not to think about the lad waiting downstairs. He did a quick change and buttoned Zayn's onesie back up, kissing his forehead.
"Daddy sad?" Zayn whispered, hesitantly bringing his eyes up to meet Liam's. They were downcast, and instead of Liam's usual smile, he only had a frown. "Sowwy..."
Liam felt his heart nearly break. "No, Zayn... don't apologize. It isn't your fault." He sighed, playing with his hair and smoothing it out of his face. Trying, at least. "Are you done napping?"
"Yeah..."
He nodded, turning to leave the room. Just before he could try and decide what to do with Zayn, though, he practically turned right into Harry's chest. He let out a tiny gasp and tightened his grip, giving the other lad a wide-eyed stare. "Harry, fuck-"
"Bad!" Zayn chirped, poking Liam's cheek. "Bad Daddy." Unlike Liam, he didn't even notice Harry, let alone realize what kind of threats he could give after seeing this.
Liam bit his lip, but he nodded and turned him so he was leaning against his shoulder, slipping his dummy into his mouth. "Harry, look, you should have just stayed downstairs..."
"Why?" Harry frowned, leaning against the doorframe. He peeked over at Zayn and couldn't help but smile despite himself. "I wanted to meet Zayn."
The strange, deep voice filled Zayn's ears, making him look up in surprise. He knew this man had to be safe if his Daddy was letting him be near him, but that didn't mean he wasn't shy. He tugged on Liam's shirt with a frown, pressing his face into his neck. "Who that?"
Liam smiled a little at how adorably shy he was. He looked over at Harry as if asking permission, and when the curly-haired lad smiled and nodded his head once, he kissed the top of Zayn's head. "That's Harry, love. He's Daddy's friend. Do you want to meet him?"
"Hawwy?" Zayn peeked at him. "Nice?"
"He's very nice."
Zayn still seemed hesitant to actually speak to him and say hello, and Liam knew that they could get along if he took matters into his own hands. He looked over to Harry and smiled, giving him a pleading look so he might make the first move. He didn't seem to have a problem with it.
"Hi!" He chirped, walking forward until he was just a little bit closer to the shy lad. "What's your name?"
"Z-Zayn." He frowned, looking up and practically hiding the rest of himself in Liam's chest. "Hawwy?"
"Yeah, babe. I'm Harry," He agreed, chuckling softly. He was good with kids, or at least he thought he was, so this shouldn't be too bad as long as it was exactly as Liam had described to him. "It's nice to meet you. Your Daddy told me a lot of nice things about you."
Large golden eyes flickered between Liam and Harry, and when they landed on the younger again, he was a little more comfortable. "Nice things?" He asked hesitantly, peeking up at him through dark eyelashes. Liam hadn't expected him to converse with Harry already, but Zayn went beyond that to even reach his hands out toward Harry. Liam started to frown and pull him back, but then Harry exceeded his expectations and took Zayn into his own arms. Zayn let out a tiny giggle and leaned against Harry's chest. "Hi Hawwy."
"Hi there," Harry chuckled and shifted him around in his arms, making sure they were both comfortable. He gazed around the nursery in surprise. It was just like a normal one only bigger, and it was clear that a lot of money had gone into it. "Did you draw all of these pretty pictures hanging up?"
Zayn's eyes lit up, and he grinned and nodded, pointing to the closest one. "That's me and Daddy and uncles."
"It's beautiful. Do you think you could draw me one?"
If Zayn hadn't already been won over, that was definitely the last straw. "Yes! Draw now?"
"Sounds good to me."
Liam, still stunned, watched on as Harry started toward the playroom, letting Zayn point out the proper way. Zayn sat down with paper and pens in his hand and shoved some to Harry too. "Make me picture?"
"I can try. I may not be as talented as you, though."
Zayn blushed but started on his picture, using different colors every so often. Harry also worked at making a rather silly picture. When he glanced up and met Liam's eyes, he winked, sending his boyfriend's heart fluttering. He had done it. He didn't know how, but he had the perfect baby and a perfect boyfriend.
Happily Ever After never seemed so true.
