Day Five

New Jersey

"Who was that?" Maria asked from the other room.

Tony sighed and shoved the phone back in his pocket. He went to doorway and leaned against the jamb. Maria had her back to him, stirring a big pot of pasta with a wooden spoon. He watched her work, her long, dark hair bouncing and her hips swaying in those jeans. She had gained a little weight in the twenty-plus years they'd been married, but she was still beautiful to him.

"Who was that?" she repeated when she noticed him.

"My brother," he said, his mood souring.

"Vince? What's up?"

"Not Vince. Joey," he corrected.

She stiffened. "It's been a while."

"Nearly ten years," Tony said. "And still not long enough."

"What did he want?" she asked.

"Same thing he always wants, money," Tony replied with a scowl. His mom said Joey had mental issues, but Tony agreed with his dad: Joey was a fucking drunk and druggie who needed to clean up his act.

"Where is he these days?"

"Miami," Tony replied.

"Isn't that where all those killing have been happening?"

"Yeah, Joey says it's crazy, people just attacking others for no reason. Some new drug maybe."

"The news said it was some sort of death cult. They even broke into a morgue and stole a bunch of bodies or something." She turned, looking pale. "I know you don't like your brother much, but—"

"I know," Tony interrupted. "He said someone attacked him, bit him. He's really freaked out, even for Joey. I told him I wouldn't give him money until I see some sign he's clean but I would wire him a bus ticket back to New Jersey. Besides, if I don't, he'll only go to Mom, and she can't afford it."

"Once he gets here?" Maria asked.

"He's on his own."
