Chapter 1

 —————————————————————————————————————————————————-

The first day of high school started out as a cold, dark, and dreary morning. Which was a bit odd since it was the middle of August. I got out of bed and went straight to the bathroom. I stared at myself in the mirror. I could still see some of the swelling around my eyes from yesterday's abuse.  I let out a sigh of disappointment knowing that now I would need to add some makeup to my morning routine. Turning  around to the shower. I step inside engulfing my  mind with the memories of the past, wondering where it all went wrong.

After I had finished showering and brushing my teeth, I put on my uniform. It was a white polo shirt with a tie that was a  black and white copying the skirt. Most people hate wearing uniforms, while on the other hand I really didn't mind having one. It saves me the trouble of finding a good outfit for each day and gives the illusion that everything is normal in my life, like a regular teenager.

I went into the bathroom one last time to fix my red hair and anything else that was out of place before I made my way down stairs.  Walking  into the dining room I could already feel the hateful stares. My stepmother like a Disney movie played the accurate part of being a evil and abusive creature. My stepbrother... an asshole and he made sure I knew it everyday. Sitting down with my step mother and  brother while eating breakfast wasn't an unusual site. I  was waiting for the abuse, the teasing, and occasional hitting.

Our butler moved the chair from under the table for me so that I could sit down. I gave him a small smile and whispered thanks. Alexis was one of the few things left that I liked about this place. He's so nice and kind to everyone, but my step brother and mother treat him horribly. It's a mystery to why he hasn't quit his job already.

Ignoring my step mother and step brother, I start to eat my breakfast. Not even a minute after I had sat down to eat, my step mother starts the first waves of insults.

"Alexis ," she began in a sickly sweet tone. "How many times have I told you not to let her sit at the table?  She must not be treated as one of your employers, let alone a lady. Not to mention that the sight of her makes me gag. Maybe I have to remind you in your paycheck again." She had a slight crazed look on her face when she finished.

"I'm sorry lady Claire. I will see to it that it doesn't happen again."

Alexis's eyes shifted to me, wincing slightly. To be honest, her words didn't hurt anymore. I stopped letting their words and actions get to me a long time ago. When I realized that my dad was not going to divorce her anytime soon, I came to a resolution that I would just have to suck it up and bear with it. Although, it was nice that Alexis cared about me enough to help me.

"For heaven sakes you and your disgusting father are just  alike. Waiting for his death is getting  tiring; should I  just spike his drink already." Claire said softly like no one could hear her.

I slammed my hand down on the table and stood up. "I can't believe you? How selfish could you be? He's given you everything and you still want more. Can't you and your pathetic son show some compassion. If it's so much of a problem why  don't you leave. I promise the door won't  hit you on your  way out."

My step mother walked up to me and was about to slap me when my brother stopped her. We all look at him surprised. For a moment I actually thought my step brother was protecting me for once, but I was wrong. I felt it...my brother's hand across my cheek.

"Don't you dare talk to my mom like that.  You of all people should be glad we helped your father. If I don't recall before my mom met your dad, he was a complete mess. He didn't care for himself and he definitely didn't care about you. Without us your dad would have been dead a long time ago from all his suicide attempts. Even you his very own daughter couldn't stop him from following his late wife. I don't know why you are even in your father's will when you have done nothing to deserve it. Even if we leave your father, he'll come crawling back to my mother. I can't wait for your dad to die so we can inherit his money and get out of this place." Stunned  I stumbled backwards and spat at him.

"Don't you ever," as tears started to run down my cheek and I mean ever say that about my dad; my dad will never come crawling back to you and your skank mother." I said.

Before my step brother could hit me again I braced myself for the pain, I could feel  his hand move through the air when Alexis stopped him in midair. "Don't you think it's enough master? She's just scared of losing her father, please forgive her". My step brother reluctantly let go and sat back down at the table to finish his meal making sure to drop my breakfast on the floor as a warning.

Still feeling the stings in my cheek from the slap, I  helped Alexis clean the mess up before walking out. Sometimes I wonder why I'm still here. I really can't take this anymore.

Walking into my father's room  and seeing him on the bed with the blinker on next to him.  It broke my heart. I walked up to him and whispered "Daddy, Good morning?"

His eyes opened a bit and he smiled. "Oh Margret, everyday you look more and more like your mother."

"Yeah dad, you've been telling me that a lot lately."

"Have I now? You remind me so much of your mother. The beautiful red hair and bright grey eyes. I wonder what you took from me?"

laughing, I kissed him goodbye. My dad, the handsome yet sick CEO of Asterisks had to marry the devil.

I went into the living room and grabbing  my book bag, school jacket and keys. By the time I got outside, I saw my step brother climbing in to our shared limousine.  Knowing that being near him right now might set him off I decided to walk.

Getting my umbrella out of my book bag, I opened it and started to walk my way to school. When I was about a block from school. I saw this guy handsome yet rough walking in the same direction. He was wearing my school's uniform  and drenched in the rain.  He must be an idiot I thought as  I ran to catch up with him. Taping his shoulder and clearly out of breath I managed to hand him an umbrella and squeeze out "you must really like getting sick."

When he turned to look at me, his electric blue eyes collided with my sliver ones.
