Summer was here. I laid on a yellow towel, on a bed of green grass. It was almost the end of the holidays, the sun hung low in the sky, the grass was tickled by the breeze.
"Hey, Ma." I saw my mum's freckled face before me and her tired grey eyes. "Imogen, dear." She replies. A smile creeps up my face, "Its so sunny today Ma." I said.
I've always loved my Mum. She has too. I remember the times we used to play in the park when I was a kid. She would always join in, having fun like she was a kid again.
I remember her saying, "Keep your eyes open, Im!" As I'd shut my eyes tight, frightened as a toddler on the Ferris Wheel at Burnham carnival. Love that place.
Before all this grown up mellarky, she used to sit me on her lap, me giggling like the bright colourful kid I was.
She picked me up out of the car.And that was the last time.
She held my hand when we walked into that small, white, clean room .
And that was the last time.
"Mum?! Mum?" I stared at her gravestone, the breeze tickling the grass... The sun low in the sky.
But she's all gone.
I want to see her again. Cancer is my enemy. More than any human life. I hear my mum's warming voice, "Keep your eyes open!"
I don't want to close my eyes- I'll, I'll forget her. When I keep my eyes open, she's there.. On her grave, at home.
As long as I keep my eyes open
She's here
With me
Forever.
