Two weeks have passed.
Mom and dad's arguments haven't died yet, instead, it keeps on getting worse. However, I'm glad I managed to walk to my room everyday after work without bumping into either of them.
I lay on my bed, staring at the ceiling. The room had faint bluish rays of light escaping in through the window blinds, probably from the street lights. It made my plain white room look dark blue and gloomy, yet gorgeous.
I sigh and pick my phone to check the time.
It read 1:52AM but their voices were loud and clear. I grab the pillow on my side and press it against my ears, trying to block their voices out but no matter what I did, it would go to vain.
I don't know what's up with Scout. He hasn't come to pick nor drop us for a couple of days. Whenever I call him, he says he's busy. Whenever I message him on kik, I'm left on read. If I text him, he either doesn't reply or replies back after hours, that too, in such a cold way.
But still, I don't give up. I unlock my phone and open kik.
Demxtria (1:56AM):
Babe, hey. You haven't messaged me all day.
Is everything okay?
R✔️Scoutatt (1:59AM):
Hey. Was just busy with job interviews and family probs.
I'm tired rn, so, goodnight. Ttyl.Demxtria (2:00AM):
Oh :( It's alright.
I love you soooo much! <3
R✔️I stared at the screen, expecting a reply back for almost five minutes.
"Guess he fell asleep. I should, too." I assure myself and lock the phone, placing it under my pillow and pulling the blanket over my face, trying to put myself to sleep.
I woke up the next day, got ready, went to work, came back walking since Scout ditched us yet again and had to hear the midnight arguments.
Everything was going on as usual when..
Two days later, I unlock the door and got into the house after work. I lock it twice and place the key over the shoe rack, laying my hand flat against the wall and leaning towards it while trying to undo the buckle of my shoe.
As I walk towards my bedroom, I see mom standing in front of the door with her arms crossed.
"Demetria, we need to talk. Get changed and come to my room." She sternly says and then, walks away.
"What is it now?" I groan. She obviously did not hear me since I didn't say it out too loud.
I change into my shorts and a comfortable tee, put my phone to charge and walk out of my room.
I knock at the door of her room and she calls out saying, "Come in."
"Yes, mom, what was so urgent that we had to talk like, now-now? I'm tired, you know. I had a long day." I lean against the wall and cross my arms.
"If you're done being a waste of my time, can you put that filth off and get inside right away?" Mom angrily almost yells, turning her head towards the side.
I peep and realize that dad was standing in the balcony and smoking. I have to admit, even I hated his smoking habit. The smell of cigarettes made me breathless.
I wonder what this is about, I thought to myself. It's really rare for him to be in her room. She's mostly in his room fighting with him, or they just meet up in the store room and practice like a metal band would.
He puts his cigarette out and enters the room. He had started to get white hair on his head as well as his beard and his skin wrinkled up all over, but I had never noticed since I rarely saw him.
"So, what's up?" I ask, cooly.
Mom glares at dad, signaling him to get something. He furiously sighs and grabs a set of papers off the table.
Mom takes a deep breath and speaks, "You're big enough to understand now, Demetria, that your father and I can't stand each other anymore. We both aren't that old yet that we can't enjoy ourselves, which can never happen if we're together."
I frown, looking at them both.
Dad hands the papers over to me. I look down and scan the words carefully. My eyes widen, not sure if in shock or because I was tearing up and trying to hold it in.
It read:
DECREE OF DIVORCEIt had their signatures on the bottom,
and filed stamped above it."Your father and I had applied for a divorce a few weeks ago. The certificate and other papers came in today. We are officially divorced."
