(AU) In an alternate universe, a universe parallel to ours, this is how their love prevails...
~*~*~*~
Lana Lang has lived next door to Clark Kent since they were little.
They grew up in Smallville together. They've known each other all their lives. He's had a crush on her for forever, and in highschool, she finally acknowledged his feelings for her. She begins falling in love with him, too, and eventually, they become a couple. The highschool sweethearts they were always predicted by everyone to be.
Their love only grew deeper over the years, especially after he tells her his secret, which only brought them even closer. But after college, he had to fulfill his destiny by becoming a superhero, and Jor-El needed him to go into his training. So he did. He didn't want to go, but Lana persuades him, telling him the world needs him. He also doesn't want to leave her, but she assured him she'll be fine. He wanted to ask her to wait for him, but he doesn't want to do that to her. When she says she's going to be loving him forever no matter what, he finally asks her to wait for him, and she promised she would.
So she waited.
And waited, and waited...and waited for him. Soon, he realized that his training could take years, decades even, and after that, he would still need to play the role of this superhero to the rest of the world. Not wanting her to wait for him that long, and not wanting to sort of trap her into her promise, he sends her a message that he doesn't want her to wait for him anymore. He just wants her to be happy, and since he thinks he might not be able to do that for her anymore, he'd rather she finds this happiness in somebody else.
Her heart was broken, but she tried to move on. Knowing all the while, she'll never find the heart to love another the way she loves him. In the meantime, he knows in his heart, he'd never love somebody else ever again. He could never imagine ever loving anybody other than her.
Years passed, and they went on with their lives. Finally, his training was complete and he returns to Smallville. But only his parents knew. His homecoming was discreet.
He tells Martha and Jonathan he needs to move to Metropolis where he is most needed, as the town is pretty much peaceful and crime-free anyway. Unlike the crime rate in the city which grows worse every hour.
