10 YEARS AGO:

Chase stroked Cathy's cheek as he watched her sleep. "I'm sorry about all of this Cat - I never meant to hurt you." He gave a soft, guilty chuckle. "Or maybe I did, at first. When I first saw the way Caleb looked at you. I knew he had instantaneously fallen for you, because I gave you the same look the day I met you." Chase suddenly got up, and started pacing. "That's when I knew you had to be my pawn in this game. I want you to know that I did love you - I do love you. I love you more than myself, and let's be honest, I think the world of myself."

Chase stopped pacing and sat on the bed next to Cathy again. He studied her features, afraid that he'd never see her this peaceful again. "I'm going to use every bit of my magic possible to make you forget every bad thing I've done to you. I'm going to make sure we're far away from here, and we lead the life we deserve. I'll make sure you get everything you deserve." Chase felt his heart hurt. It made him feel weak, but he couldn't help it.

Looking at the clock, Chase knew that Caleb would come try to find them soon. "It's time Cat." His eyes turned black as they were instantly at the barn. "I'm sorry in advance." He said to her before he used to put himself at the top of the barn as he waited for Caleb.

Chase only had to wait five minutes before Caleb came running into the barn. As Chase played his game of cat and mouse with Caleb, he didn't realize that he'd actually fight back. Not that it mattered since Chase was more powerful, but it was a waste of time and energy. He had to commend Caleb on his efforts though.

When the moment came when Chase genuinely thought the fight was over, that he had won, that was when the lightning hit Caleb. As if some sort of sick karma for all he had done wrong.

Someone had willed Caleb their powers. Chase knew it had to be Caleb's dad. A father's love to save his son and precious Coven. It made him more angry and jealous. No one had loved Chase like that. No one except Cathy, and here he was putting her in harms way as a fire was going on in the very barn she was in. He knew no harm would come to her. Chase had put a charm on Cathy before this fight had started. Making sure she wouldn't become collateral damage. At least not physically. He would make sure she was always protected tonight, and after tonight... Or so he thought.

It was then Caleb hit him with his own ball of energy. Everything flashed before Chase's eyes. His childhood, his wreck with his parents- every moment with Cathy. It all flashed before his eyes as he felt himself be sucked into a hole. "No!" He yelled as he suddenly felt complete darkness surround him. Then a weight was on him, he pushed to get it off of him. Chase looked around to find he had been covered by the burned down barn.

Chase stood up to find that it was now dawn, and fire fighters were walking around him, as if looking for something. It was like he was invisible to them as he walked away from the barn. After he got past the smoke and firemen he saw Cathy in Caleb's car by herself. He could tell just by looking at her that she was broken. Walking over to her, he studied her features. Her eyes were closed as if she was finally getting to rest.

Cathy wasn't really sleeping though. Chase knew what she looked like when she was asleep, this wasn't it. She was just fighting to find peace. "Cat." Her head snapped up as she looked around for who was speaking to her. It caused Chase's heart to flutter at the fact she could hear him, but it also crushed him that she couldn't see him. He didn't understand why, or what was happening to him. "Babe, it's me." He said.

"Chase." She whispered out painfully. The way Cathy said his name felt like a knife to the heart.

"I'll come back for you when I'm strong enough." Chase said, trying to convince himself of his own words. He didn't really know if he could come back. He had no clue where he was or what he'd become. Was he nothing more than a ghost? He seemed to be dead, but he didn't feel like he was. In the end though, how would you truly know if you were dead or alive?

"Don't go." She pleaded out in a whisper.

"I'm sorry Cat." Chase paused as he felt a tear slip from his eye. "I love you."

Cathy didn't hesitate to tell him she loved him back. It made Chase smile, but he soon felt himself being pulled away into a dark abyss again. He wasn't sure where he was going, but he was going to figure out how to get back to Cathy. No matter how long it took.
