Today was time to go outside and play in the front yard. Quince never let Ruby, Socks or Tiny play out there because of the dangers they might find. But today was special! She was feeling happy today and decided she would let them go out to play.
Ruby and Socks were tussling on the ground. Tiny, however, was looking around. He was taking in all the sights. He chased a butterfly and nearly caught it. He looked at all the pretty flowers and smiled at the sights of the tall trees.
He ran over to his mom. He looked up at her, "Hey mom! What's it like on the other side of the fence?"
"Scary and dangerous," Quince replied.
"What? It can't be all that bad!" Tiny replied.
"No... There are cats who don't have owners. They are a scourge to all good things. They harm whoever gets in their way," she told him firmly.
A scourge? Tiny thought.
"Now go play with your brother and sister! I'm sure they'd be glad to let you join in," Quince said.
"Okay!" Tiny replied. He ran over to where his brother Socks, and sister Ruby were. They were playing with this feathery thing and Tiny was intrigued.
Ruby and Socks were batting at the fuzzy thing. Tiny watched them curiously. He tilted his head wondering why they weren't catching it.
He ran over to them and jumped high in the air and caught it in his mouth. He smiled and saw Ruby and Socks staring at him with wide eyes in disbelief. Did he really just catch that? Tiny stood proud and puffed out his chest. He was happy he finally did something to capture everyone's attention.
Just then, Socks came over. He grabbed the feathery thing out of Tiny's mouth, "You're not playing it right!" he scolded.
"But... I got it," Tiny replied.
"You're not supposed to catch it mouse-brain!" Ruby added in angrily.
"But..." Tiny was upset that his sister and brother were not happy with him, "I-I got it!"
"Ruby and Socks! Be nice!" Quince yelled at the two.
"But mamma! He's no fun to play with! He doesn't do it right!" Ruby said.
"Play nice," Quince repeated sternly.
Ruby and Socks looked back over at Tiny. Then, they looked at each other. Socks spoke up, "Hey short fry, how about a nice game of chase?"
"Okay!" Tiny obviously didn't see the trick they were going to play.
"You're it!" Ruby said. She got into a hunting position. So did Socks.
Tiny darted off as fast as he could. He went in a zigzag motion and then all around the fields. He felt as if nothing could stop him!
He was suddenly stopped by his older brother Socks, "Gotcha squirt!" he smirked evilly.
Ruby snuck up behind him, "GOTCHA!!" and she tagged him a little too hard.
"Ouch!" Tiny yelped.
"You know, little known fact..." Socks started off, "Kits like you? They get thrown in the river."
"Wh-what?" Tiny said.
"Yeah. A punny runt like you would never survive out there. You should know this," Ruby said.
Tiny backed away slowly. He darted off in between the bushes and ran for his life. He didn't look back. He couldn't stand how they treated him. So what if he were to be killed out here? At least it's better than being in that StarClan forsaken house with his brother and sister and mother who only acted like she cared.
Tiny stopped in the woods. He didn't know which way was back home. He sat down and tucked his tail around his paws. He thought about how much better it would have been if he had just stood up for himself.
If only I were stronger... Rung in his ears.
