Chapter 2

Mating Season

My performance with Chloe didn’t end with a standing ovation. Instead our house turned into a war zone. Now I raced down the highway leaving her and Nashville behind me.  Counting deer carcasses that were splattered on the road side was the only thing I could do to take my mind off her. If I wasn’t counting dead deer I was dodging state troopers. Hiding between eighteen wheelers and other speed breakers had become my obsession while navigating the roads back to St. Louis.

Now those familiar Chevy lights were racing towards me. My heart stopped and my driving foot went numb making me ease off the gas. Fortunate for me and my pocket, the trooper wasn’t gunning for me.

He zoomed around me and pulled over a grey Pontiac that was speeding ahead. I turned up my radio and switched to the outer left lane. I was determined not to get a ticket. I hit cruise control and went back to counting the dead animals on the road.

I did anything to keep my mind off my argument with Chloe. I thought telling her about my plans late would prolong our arguments. Unfortunately Tony’s call threw her rage into overdrive. She started ranting like a mad woman Sunday morning. I guess the events were sinking in that I was leaving and as the hours passed her questions increased about why I didn’t tell her.

She slammed doors as I packed, cussed me out as I put my bags in the car, and almost smacked me when I went to kiss her goodbye. All I wanted to do was get away from that shit. I guess that’s what made this drive go by so quick. The four hour and change trip up highway 24 to 57 and finally up 64 to “Tha Lou”, as we called it, felt shorter than usual.

It took four hours and thirty four minutes for me to see the arch. When I did I knew I was finally home. As much as I thought I hated St. Louis, it always felt like a reunion with a long lost family member when I returned.

My legs were starting to cramp so I stopped downtown before heading to my Mom’s house. I arranged to stay with her for a few months until I found us a new place. Easy way to save money until my pay increase from the promotion kicked in.

I took the exit to the Riverfront and let my 6’1 frame out of the cramped driver’s seat. “The Front” was the same as it always was. The dusty cobble pavement bore signs of the recent swelling of the dirty Mississippi. I walked a bit along the mud brown river edge watching the water as the river sucked up logs and debris. It all brought back so many memories.

Back when Tony and I used to run the town and bring girls down here. We would tag team them like wrestlers in the back of his truck. Back when Tony and I were tighter than virgin pussy. Back when I could do whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. I hadn’t talked to my boy in a while. I guess responsibilities and a few hundred miles could do that to a friendship. We still had the brother bond, we just didn’t talk as much.

I really hadn’t talked to any of my old friends in a while. It got me to wondering. I leaned on the warm hood of my car and started to think. I missed those times when I could break out and go without having to tell someone. Maybe this promotion was a divine way of getting my freedom back. I scanned through the contacts in my phone until I found his number.

“Wassup homie” he answered. I hadn’t talked my boy since I hung up on him the other night. But I didn’t need to explain or apologize for that. He didn’t even mention it.

“Man Dog, wassup wit you Tony?”

“Nothin much. Was just about to text you. You in town yet?” Tony asked me.

“Yeah, I just made it in.”

“That’s wassup. You wanna get out tonight?” He must have read my mind. He started telling me about a few spots that were all new to me. I didn’t give a damn where we went.
