I woke up the next morning and Riker was gone. I checked on Kelly and she was still asleep. So I went to the kitchen and made me a sandwich. I was eating and watching TV when Kelly walked in.  “Morning, Sunshine” I said. “Morning” she said and went to the kitchen. Five minutes later she came back and sat next to me on the couch with her own sandwich. “Where’s your better half?” she asked. “I was hoping you would know. He was already gone when I woke up” I said. “He’s probably out eating ice-cream or something. That guy is unstoppable when it comes to frozen treats. “She shrugged. “True” I answered without taking my eyes of the TV. “Are you nervous about the pregnancy?” Kelly asked after a long silence. “Of course! I tried talking to Riker about it, but he won’t really listen to me. I can’t really blame him for wanting to enjoy this moment in life, but we have serious and important stuff to talk about. On top of that, I don’t really know anything about being a mum.” I replied. “Like what?” she asked and put her empty plate on the table. “Like me leaving. We are only here on vacation, you know that. And this is gonna take time and money and this is a huge change. It’s gonna affect us for the rest of our life and I don’t know if were ready for it. I need to know that he thinks and what future he sees for us. I can’t raise this baby alone and I don’t know if he is willing to come home with me.” I said and tried to hold back the tears as I understood how uncertain my future was at the moment. “I’m really scared, Kelly!” She hugged me and said “just wait until the news sink in a little, then try talking to him again.” “Thanks, Kelly. But I’m running out of time. We’re going home in three weeks” I said and the tears had started to flow now. “I know. I know. Just give it a couple of days, okay?” she said hugging me tighter. “Okay” I said and hugged her back.

About nine thirty in the evening Riker came through the door. “Hey, where have you been all day?” I asked as he entered the living room. “I’ve been out” he said and sat down next to me and Kelly on the couch. “Where out?” I asked. “Just out” he replied and I knew something was going on. “So you have just been out for like fifteen hours not doing anything in particular?” I asked again and raised an eyebrow. “That’s right” I said. He didn’t even give me a glance through the whole conversation. “How come you couldn’t leave a note, answer texts or pick up the phone then?” I said and gave him an angry stare. “It didn’t cross my mind” he said just as cold. “I’m going to bed now” he said and got up from the couch. “Why?” “Because I’m tired” he said while walking to the bedroom and closing the door behind him before I got the chance to ask any more questions. I looked over at Kelly. We were both looking at each other with a look that said "what the hell was that all about?" “Well… he sure looked tired” Kelly said and shrugged. “No way! Something’s up!” I said giving the bedroom door a suspicious glare.

The next day I woke up and Riker was gone again. Great! Kelly and I went out for breakfast and we went grocery shopping before we headed back home. In the evening we went to see a movie and we got home really late. I assumed Riker had already gone to bed when we got home, but when I entered the bedroom he wasn’t there. I woke up later that night by Riker climbing in to bed. I looked at the clock. 02:36 a.m. What on earth is going on with him? I heard him snore as soon as his head hit the pillow.

This continued on for about a week. I never got the chance to talk to him since he was gone when I woke up, and came home after I’d fallen asleep. The only trace of him being home was his laundry on the floor each morning.

Until one day Kelly had gone out with a friend, and I stayed home. I heard the door open and close. “That was quick” I yelled out to Kelly. “What?” I heard Riker answer. He entered the living room and I jumped of the couch. “And who the hell are you?” I said and gave him an angry glare. “What are you talking about?” he said and came over to me. “Oh, I didn’t recognize you. I haven’t seen you in weeks, you know. That the hell is going on with you? You leave before I wake up in the morning, you come home after midnight, and you never answer texts or phone calls. I am going through a really tough time right now, and you decide to just ignore me and hide away? We have a lot to discuss, actually. For god’s sake, Riker! I’m going home in a couple of weeks. I’m pregnant with your child! Do you really think this is the right time to pull something like this? What are you doing, Riker? Why won’t you talk to me?” the tears started streaming down my face, but I continued “are you on drugs? Are you cheating on me? Don’t you love me anymore? Just tell me what’s wrong. I need you to tell me!” I was yelling at him while the tears flowed from my eyes. “I do love you, Maria. It’s nothing like that. I promise.” He said while looking at the floor. “Then what the fuck is wrong with your head? I need you, Riker! I needed you all week and you weren’t there for me. I am scared! I am hurt! I don’t know what I did to you to make you behave like this, but I don’t want to lose you! I can’t lose you! I need you, Riker! I love you!” While I stuttered the last sentences he pulled me into a tight hug.

“I’ve been fixing things. I won’t tell you yet, but I promise it will all be okay.” He said with his arms tightly around my waste. “How can you say that? How do you know that?” I whispered into his chest. “I just do. I’ve been out trying to make things better for us, but it has taken a lot of time and energy. I understand that I have been dealing with this the wrong way, and I never wanted you to feel like this. This is not the way I wanted it to be. But I promise things will get better.” He said while stroking my hair. “We have so much we need to talk about” I whispered again with my eyes closed. It was so good to feel him holding me again. “We can talk tomorrow. I promise” he said picked me up. I was absolutely exhausted from crying, yelling and worrying. He carried me into bed and lay down next to me, pulling me close. I instantly fell asleep.

The next morning Riker was gone again. I was so mad I actually felt sick. He came in through the door half an hour after I woke up. I got off the couch ready to yell at him again, but when I saw the wide smile on his face I decided to hear him out first. He almost ran over to me and kissed me. “Hey, Sweetie. Look, I know this whole project ended up pretty horrible for you, and I cannot express how sorry I am for that. But I think this might cheer you up and maybe even make up for it” he said and handed me a small wrapped item. I unwrapped it and opened the little box to find a key inside. “What, is this like the key to your heart or something?” I joked and smiled at him. “Sort of.” He said. “you can look at it as a key to my heart, a key to our future, a key to happiness and the key to our apartment!” he said with a wide grin.

“Apartment?” I asked and raised my eyebrows. “Yeah. I know you were supposed to go home soon, so I have been out all week fixing up an apartment for us.” He said. “But, Riker, don’t you think this is the kind of thing we need to talk about? I asked again. “It probably is, but I figured we didn’t have enough time to both talk about it and then get an apartment” he answered with a insecure smile. “So you just assume that I’ll drop everything I have at home and live here from now on? I have a life back home as well. And we don’t have jobs. How do you think we’re going to pay for this? I appreciate all the hard work you’ve put in and the thought behind it, but I just don’t think it is as simple as this.” I said and grabbed his hand. “I earn a lot of money on my concerts and we are about to release our first album, so we’ll make some money there. And you could apply for jobs here. I’ve thought this through. And no offence, what do you have to go home to now? Your family is here!” he said while squeezing my hand a little.

“You’re right!” I said and looked into his deep brown eyes. “I love you”.
