Chapter 2

One year later…

~~~
We'd be so less fragile
If we're made from metal
And our hearts from iron
And our minds from steel
And if we built an army
Full of tender bodies
Could we love each other
Would we stop to feel
And you want three wishes:
One to fly the heavens
One to swim like fishes
And then one you're saving for a rainy day
If your lover ever takes her love away
You say you want to know her like a lover
And undo her damage, she'll be new again
Soon you'll find that if you try to save her
Itrenews her anger
You will never win
And you want three wishes:
You want never bitter
And all delicious
And then one you're saving for a rainy day
If your lover ever takes her love away
You want three wishes:
One to fly the heavens
One to swim like fishes
You want never bitter
And all delicious
And a clean conscience
And all its blisses
You want one true lover with a thousand kisses
You want soft and gentle and never vicious
And then one you're saving for a rainy day
If your lover ever takes her love away
Ash smiled his sweet smile and clapped his tiny hands in glee as I played the last chord of his lullaby. His eyes sparkled and he wrapped his fist around my finger, knocking it against the neck of my guitar.
“No more, buddy, time for bed.” I chuckled.
I tucked my hands under his arms and lifted him up to rest on my chest. Kissing his soft hair, I waited till his eyes were hidden behind his lids and his breathing slowed.
Slowly and carefully, I slid him onto the bed and got up, trying not to make a sound on the worn floor boards of our room.
“He’s one already… wow!” Mom hugged me, her loving arms circling me in a familiar way.
“You’re thinking of her again… aren’t you? Oh, honey, I’m sorry. I’m proud of you though, I can tell you love him with all your heart… you’re just like you father.”
“You shouldn’t be proud, or sorry. I only just managed to scrape through and graduate! I can’t go to college, not with him always on my mind.” I pulled away from her as the anger surged. “It’s my entire fault… I should’ve never let that bloody woman near me! Never should’ve gone to her for help!” My hands fisted and I felt my nails dig into my skin.
“If I remember correctly, she cornered you just after your father died… she’s a demon! It’s not your fault… you hear me, Jesse?! I won’t listen to you demeaning yourself on your son’s first birthday. He’s your son, not hers in the least! He’s too much like you, beautiful, caring, willed and brave. And he has all the love you or I can give him!”
I looked at her surprised. She never really expresses anything, but now her eyes were flooded with anger and pure… affection.
“Why?” I sobbed. “Why do I love him so much? I…” my chest and throat tightened as I sank to the floor.
“I know, baby… I know. But you didn’t see yourself in there with him… it was so beautiful. I didn’t know what to do when you were born, but you? You do it as naturally as breathing, even for an eighteen year old!” She sat next to me and rested her head on the wall.
“Why are you such a hippy?” I laughed.
“I am not! I may not have raised you right, but I going to try my best to help you and Ash, since I always wanted a grandson.” She grinned. “I’m always here for both of you, you know that, right?”
“Yeah… I love you, Mum.” I hugged her tight.
The familiar screaming started.
“Your turn.” Mum quickly stood and rushed into the kitchen before I could say anything.
Standing, I pushed open the door and snuck inside. Taking of my shirt, I crawled onto the bed and tucked the sobbing kid into my arms.
“Shhh, I’m here, shhh. I’m here, Ash…”
