Chapter 1:

I crouch low on the branch as I glance around the sea of green that surrounds me.

"There is nothing here. I have scanned the area. No humans."  I press my back against the rough trunk, quietly reaching for my Arch.  It's smooth silver blade sliding across my palm as I cuff it in my fist.

One...Two...Three..

"What the-" I slide the deadly blade from my back, swinging at an angle so it hit the Monstri in the chest.  He stumbles back slightly, his black, soulless eyes widening at the sudden attack.  I bring my Arch down so that the curved edge hits him right  between the eyes.  His hooded head falls back, his body slumping against the damp Earth.

I stand there.  My grey eyes staring at the dead solider in front of me.  His hood falling from his head, revealing the inked skin underneath.  Their smooth designs curve against the bones of the Monstri's sharp features, making them breath-takingly beautiful.

"Exa!  Exa, where are you?  There is a scout near b-oh."  I bent down and wipe the black toxin from my Arch.  I could feel Toby's eyes on me, cautiously watching my every movement.

"I don't need a guard.  I know how to take care of myself." I state as I rise to my feet, slipping the blade back into it's holder.

"Oh," he laughs, "I know you can, but orders are orders." I give him a sideway glance before following him back to HQ.

There is a reason you are like this, and you know it. But....what?

"Day!" the young boy's head slowly lifted, staring up at the tall man in front of him. His black coat fitted his figure, making him seem taller than he really was. His bald head was covered in dark, threatening marks that curved along his face. His black soulless eyes stared back into the boy's.

The young boy rose up from his sitting position, straightening up in front of the man. "Yes, Lord?" his voice sounded raw and husky, like he hadn't talked in years.

The man raised his chin slightly as he slowly nodded towards the seat the boy had gotten up from.

"I have a new mission for you." The boy's body stiffened as he stared straight ahead of him.

"What is it?"

"Assassination."

"Exactly who am I killing?"

"A human. A human girl to be exact." He walked around the room, his cloak shifting slightly with every movement. "She has been quite a little troublemaker. Some how, she has been managing to kill our scouts. And I don't like it."

Of course you don't you bastard.

"I want you to find her, and kill her....slowly. Are we clear?"

"Name?" the boy asked, his eyes still trained on the wall.

"Exa Wilde."

"Do you realize how much trouble you are in?" my brother roars, slamming his powerful fist on the wall beside my head. I roll my eyes as I slip past him and head towards the HQ. "Yep, I am in so much trouble. What can I say? I'm a wild one." I reply, sarcasm literally dripping from each word.

"They will come for you Exa! And kill you!"

"Well what was I suppose to do Josiah? Let him find our hide out and terminate us? Kill us like the savage beasts they are? Like how they slaughtered our parents?"

Silence. Silence is all I hear as I gaze into my brother's green eyes. The same eyes that I looked up to when I was a small kid. The eyes that would softly peer at me in his arms. But now, they are stone cold.

"They may have slaughtered our parents, Exa. But over my dead body, will  they slaughter you." He spun on his heel, disappearing into the head quarter building. I let out a frustrating groan, pulling at the loose ends of my hair. I just stupidly brought  up the past and now I was paying for it.  I was six when it happened. For all I knew, it was a perfectly normal day. The sun was high in the sky, beating down on my brother and I's necks, making the walk home even more perfect.

"God Exa, you are such a slow poke!" Josiah had said, giving me a slight bump with his elbow, grinning down at me, a few droplets falling onto my face from his wet hair.

"I'll show you slow!" I gave him a shove before racing down the old back road, my bare feet thumping against the  pavement. I was only a few yards from the house. A few yards..

My feet slide to a halt at the sound of my mother's ear piercing scream.

"Mom!" I yelled as I ran towards the house.

"Mom!"  A few more yards. Just a few more....

I felt a pair of strong arms wrap around my small waist, pulling me into the tree line of the forest. I fought, as hard as I could, but Josiah would not let go of me, keeping his hand over my mouth. I glanced back to the house and stiffened. A swarm of black cloaked men came out of our house.  I watched in horror as they held their long white hands up to the house, black makings covering their knuckles and up their arms.

The house caught fire.

"No!!" I tried to shriek, but Josiah held on tighter, his own eyes staring wide eyed at the scene in front of him. Sobs, racked my body as I watched the place where we grew up fall to pieces, our parents inside.

"I'm sorry, Exa. It's going to be okay. Shh, it's going to be okay." he whispered softly into my ear as I clutched onto his shirt, my tears staining his shirt, his own falling into my hair.

"Are you okay, Exa?" Toby asked, his hand brushing mine ever so slightly. I curled my hand away and gave him a small smile.

"Yeah, I'm fine."
