..I was standing on top of a hill overlooking a valley burning with fires while ash slowly rained down on me in thick, black flakes. I had caused a war. A war that didn’t need to start in the first place. Hot tears ran down my face and neck, stinging the bloody cuts from the battle. Below me there were massive explosions of fire and people in various armor furiously fighting and screaming, but I didn’t hear any of it. All I could hear was the rapid beating of my heart. I felt as though the atmosphere was pressing down all its weight on me, forcing me to collapse..
Let me explain how I got myself into this mess in the first place. My name is Arianna Rousseau. I’m a seventeen year old Egyptian Magician and a descendant of Cleopatra. I grew up in Washington DC, until about a year ago, when I was recruited to Boston to be trained by Sadie and Carter Kane, my two new best friends and about the only magicians who give a damn about the rising god of evil, Apophis.
“Hey Arianna get over here we need to talk!” Sadie yelled at me from the doorway of the training room.
“I’m a bit preoccupied at the moment!” I yelled back in annoyance as I ran around with my wand trying to round up all the penguins that Felix, our youngest trainee so generously summons all over the house.
We find penguins in empty fireplaces, the balcony, bedrooms, and off course, the training room. I was teaching a defense against monsters class when he summoned an army of penguins to fight off a hieracosphinx, a gryphon-like chimera I summoned up for my trainees to battle. I ended up fighting it with Alyssa’s help while the rest of the students ran around in the confused pack of penguins, trying to round up the panicked birds.
“Perhaps you need some help?” Sadie says in her British accent then casually walks over to me, completely ignoring the monster in front of her.
“Uh..YEAH! You really didn’t need to ask!”. She takes her wand out of her bag and does her favorite spell, the destruction spell. “HA-DI!!” and with that, what used to be the monster was now just ashes on the floor. Now I feel kinda bad for the creature, it didn’t even see that coming.
After magically sending the penguins back to Antarctica and getting the training room in order, the trainees all went to get ready for dinner while Sadie and I went into the library, where Carter and Amos (their uncle and the leader of the House of Life) were waiting at the large marble table.
The heavy doors of the library closed behind us, and suddenly I knew what we were going to talk about.
“Good evening Amos, so what’s the discussion topic today?” I ask half sarcastically and half bitterly. “Hello Arianna, Sadie,” he politely smiled at us in turn, “I came here to inform you three that time is ticking by, and Ra is our only chance at defeating Apophis, I very well hope that you come up with a plan to revive him back to his godly state as soon as possible.”
Sadie and I look at Carter, the brains of this house, who looks just as hopeless and puzzled as we do.
“Well...” Sadie started, and we all look at her with great surprise, “I do have a plan, but its mad!”.
