Moving Away

An alarm clock sounded through the room, it's annoying buzz waking its owner. Hickory rolled over and groaned, forgetting to turn it off the day before. Today was his day off work, so he didn't need to be up early.

Hickory attempted to fall back asleep, but failed. Deciding that his efforts were pointless, he dragged himself out of bed, telling himself he could get a head start on today.

He left his room, quickly descending the stairs. As his feet hit the bottom steps, the smell of sausage and biscuits filled the air.

"Hickory? Is that you dear", called his mother.

"Yes it is mom! Good morning", he answered.

His mother chuckled, and set down a full plate at Hickory's spot.

"I made you breakfast Hickory", she said enthusiastically.

"Looks delicious, thanks mom." She leaned over and he gave her a peck on the cheek.

He stared down at his food, something snapping in his mind.

"Hey... This isn't some ploy to win me over is it? I can cook you know!"

His mother sat down across from him, taking delicate sips from her coffee mug.

"I was just trying to be nice to my son since he plans to leave. Though you know you can stay here as long as you like."

Hickory grumbled, now digging into
his food as the beans were spilled. He knew she'd try again. His mom tried to make it seem like he couldn't live without her, when really it seemed to be the other way around.

"I've already told you mom, I wanna know what it's like to live on my own. I appreciate your offer, but I need to experience this."

His mother side, staring into Hickory's cold, blue eyes. They were identical to her's. So was his platinum blonde hair and pale skin. Some would even mistake the two for siblings if the age difference wasn't as noticeable.

"I know", she said in defeat. "But just be careful on who you live with. Meet with them before you move in."

Hickory nodded like it was the most obvious thing ever. He pushed his now finished plate away from him, folding his arms over one another.

"Don't worry mom. I can handle myself. I'm actually going to meet someone today. A boy a year older than me who's looking for a roommate."

"Well it's nice to know it'll be someone your age." She didn't really sound that reassured though.

She stood up, taking his plate and planting a kiss on his crown of wavy hair.

"Well I suppose I should let you prepare then. I could go with you if you want? Just incase?"

Hickory shook his head and smiled.

"You worry too much mom. I'll be fine. And don't worry, I'll visit you often."

Hickory gave his mom a quick hug and thanked her again for the meal. When he returned to his room, he decided to clean a few things up. Somethings were already packed up, but the room was still cluttered.

"I gotta make sure to keep my new room cleaner", he muttered.

A few hours flew by and Hickory had nearly cleared the clutter in his room. Half a wall was piled with boxes while the other side housed trash bags.

He looked at his alarm, realizing that he should probably leave. He would have barely just enough time to get to the park.

Hickory hurried his way down, giving a wave to his mother. He noticed his father there as well, and said goodbye to him.
