CONFESSION #1: Ever since I can remember, I dreamed of becoming a pastry chef. I know it sounds stupid, but that was my dream. Most people come to New York City to become a Broadway star or famous singer.
But not me. I wanted to fold little squares of dough and butter until my fingers were sore. I wanted the warm, sweet scent of freshly baked pain au chocolat to wash over my face as I opened the oven. I live for it.

Camryn snapped her journal closed and looked out the window as the taxi wound through the crowded streets of New York City. All her life she dreamed of living in New York. As a young girl, she would envision herself walking to the market every day to buy fresh groceries or sitting in the window seat of a small coffee shop on a rainy day. Then, she would open her eyes and would see nothing but green fields for miles and would sigh. Someday, she told herself, so many years ago.
Now that she was finally doing it, Camryn couldn't help but feel like she should run back to JFK airport and catch the next plane home to Iowa. What if New York doesn't live up to my expectations? Camryn watched as bundled pedestrians kept their eyes to the ground, hurrying their way through the sleety rain that was now falling. A nervous ball rose to her throat and she tried to swallow it.
Camryn couldn't back down now. She was just hired as sous chef at one of the most famous bakeries in the city--the legendary Danner's Bakery. The bakery came into the view of Camryn's rainy cab window. Snow clung to the light blue awnings that hung over the brightly lit windows of the bakery, that sat nestled under an adorable white brick city building. A huge line curled out the door and down the city block, as far as Camryn could see. She took a deep breath and pulled on her white winter hat.
"Here we are." The taxi driver said in a heavy Brooklyn accent, mumbling under his breath. "That line stretches on for miles, no matter what day or time it is. You won't be able to get anywhere." He shook his head.
"I'll keep that in mind." Camryn smiled as she paid the driver and shut the door. She took a deep breath and turned to face the crowded street and bright bakery windows. Here goes nothing.
