"Cecilia," I heard a voice say softly, "Cecilia. Cecilia Dear. Time to wake up." A hand was shaking me gently.
"Ye-yea?" I said rubbing my eyes.
I looked around to see Laura my nurse. She had a warm calming smile on her face and she was wearing a long white dress and her hair was tied back. She looked prettish. She had her nurse hat on.
"Time to get up and do some physical therapy sweets." She said softly.
I nodded. She pulled the wheel chair over to me and helped me sit in it. She slowly wheeled me to the Physical Therapy room. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was when I first went. I always enjoyed going to the Physical Therapy room after that. The people in there were just like me, and they would always smile at me and have conversations with me whenever I would look at them.
"Hey deary," Angelia said, one of the patient's,"yesterday I saw Shawny and Thomas go outside without their wheelchairs running and having fun, they were lying the whole time! So they got kicked out of the hospital."
"Wow, really? I always thought something was fishy about those two." I nodded.
Angelia smiled at me and went back to her stretches.
Laura looked at me and helped me up.
"Ready for another day of 'fun'?" She asked, doing air quotes.
I laughed, "Sure!" I played along.
We both laughed and started some exercises.
"Hey baby cakes." My mother said, as she sat in the chair next to my medical bed.
I smiled at her and her eyes drooped, for my mom this usually meant she knew something was up.
"Whats wrong?" She asked raising my chin.
I pushed her hand off my chin, "Well...I kind of don't know you..." I started, "but you keep y'know acting like you know me...."
She laughed a little, and I looked at her confused.
"I'm your mother." She sighed, "You probably don't remember me because after your accident you went into a coma and had short term memory loss."
I laid in the bed speechless at the information told to me. I didn't know what I felt what I thought, I felt like a mixture of anger, that nobody told me, and a mixture of sadness, because my family probably had gone through tons of pain watching me in a coma.
I guess I could say, I was conflicted.
"Deary, are you gonna say somethin?" My mother asked. She looked worried, mixed with some sympathy.
Tears flooded my eyes. I shook my head and pushed my face into the pillow. My mother got up and rubbed her hands on my back, to try and comfort me.
"Its ok hun, I know. You've gone through a lot of surgeries but it's all over, all of it done."
I wanted to look at her. I wanted to get up and hug her, I wanted her to give me kisses on her head and reassure me that everything was going to be ok! But instead, I just stuck my head in the pillow and ignored her until she decided that she had enough, and left.
After my meltdown, I was curious about learning more about my surgeries and about how my family felt about me being in a coma.
"Hey Laura," I patted her shoulder, she turned around to look at me and greeted me with a smile which I obviously returned, "how many surgeries did I go through?"
She looked at me in a funny way and thought for a second. "Well that's in odd question in your case."
I nodded and gestured for her to go on.
"But I think you were in about 12."
"12? Seriously?!"
"Yep..12."
"And do you know about my family?"
"Well from time to time a little boy would come in, your father and mother come pretty frequently, sometimes your mom comes more than your dad. Uh...and a few other relatives but, that's all I guess."
I raised my eyebrows at all this information.
"Wellllll then."
"Yep. Uh..ready for more training exercises?"
I shrugged and looked at Laura, "Sure."
Sure.
