Chapter 14
Casen
A deafening silence rang out at Ethan’s proclamation and everyone turned to stare at me.
Why do I feel like a bug under a telescope? I wondered as I moved closer to Ethan, swallowing as all the attention made me uncomfortable.
Sarah was staring at me in shock, Ethan’s grandmother was staring at me with what I figured to be disdain and I don’t really know about the rest of his family members. Theirs was a mixture of emotions, but at least they didn’t make me feel like a bug.
Completely anyway.
All of a sudden Kaelen let out a squeal and threw herself at the both of us. Had I not been clinging to Ethan, she would have knocked me down. “Oh my gosh!” she exclaimed, “You are so cute! Ethan, she’s absolutely adorable! Abby wasn’t lying!” she danced around energetically, her long blond hair flying every which way.
Ethan let out a chuckle, releasing my hand and hugged her. “Thanks, Kaelen.”
“Welcome!” she sang. She turned to look at me. “I know Ethan already introduced me, but I’m his little cousin Kaelen. I’m gonna go catch up with Abby, but we’ll definitely have to hang out sometime while we’re here! I want to know more about you. Anyway, see ya!” she hugged me one more time before dashing off with a wave.
“Alright everybody, now that the introductions are over with, how about we get everything settled down and I get started on dinner. Alan, Mikey, and Casen, you’re all welcome to stay and have dinner with us if you’d like,” Miranda said, clapping her hands together.
“Thanks for the offer, Mrs. Miller, but I’m gonna pass. Mikey’s spending the night at my house tonight and my mom’s expecting us home for dinner. Can we take a rain check?”
“Of course. You’re always welcome here, you know that. I love cooking for my boys.”
“Alright. Thanks, Mrs. Miller. We’ll see you later, Ethan.”
“Alright, see you,” Ethan said. They did their usual goodbye ritual of clasping hands and knocking shoulders with each other before Alan and Mikey took off towards what I guessed to be Alan’s house.
“So, Casen, sweety, what about you? Are you going to stay for dinner?”
I shifted uncomfortably. “I…um, I don’t know…”
She smiled understandingly. “Okay, why don’t you talk it out with Ethan? I need to go get things started.” With that, she turned and ushered everybody back towards the house, leaving me and Ethan alone.
He turned to face me. “I had no idea she was going to be here…My grandma never asked and she never said anything about bringing Sarah down here.”
“I know. You wouldn’t have kept it from me if you’d known and I saw the look on your face after you came back out of the house. But how is that going to work out exactly?”
“I don’t know. I guess we’ll figure that out tonight. Anyway, do you want to stay for dinner?”
“I…I don’t know, Ethan…” I mumbled.
He squeezed both my hands with his gently. “It’s alright if you don’t want to. I know that made you uncomfortable. But I’d like you to stay,” he said, giving a smile.
I debated for a few seconds with myself and decided that I’d rather be with Ethan in an uncomfortable situation than by myself at the house waiting for my dad to come home to yell and scream at me along with other things I didn’t want to think about right now. “Alright, I’ll stay for dinner,” I told him.
