Abe never sped while driving. He never took dangerous turns or ran red lights- in fact, none of his friends could remember a moment when he had taken a risk while behind the steering wheel.
Some people, like Hamada, might use the excuse that he only started driving a year ago, and that was why he never took risks. But, anyone who knew him would probably say, "he's just a boring kinda guy." Or, according to a certain somebody, "Abe-kun a...always!!! Is! Safe!!!! Wouldn't.... Be dan...ger....ous."
So as you can imagine, Abe really did surprise himself when, without warning, he quickly swiveled around a pothole, not even bothering to look for oncoming traffic. His eyes widened once he realized the risk he just took, and his eyes darted to his passenger.
It wasn't his fault, really.
It had been a particularily rainy afternoon when Mihashi showed up to his house, soaking wet. Droplets of water hung from his eyelashes and nose, and his clothing clung to his body. He was shaking, which really sealed the deal for Abe, who pulled him in before the pitcher could say anything.
Once Mihashi had a towel, and they were sitting on the couch, Abe gave a chance for Mihashi to explain. In short, he needed a ride somewhere late at night and, with his mother out of town and his father working abroad, he had hoped Abe had some ideas.
From what Abe had heard about the location, he was certain he did not have the experience to drive there, and he was even more certain nobody would disagree with him on that. It was his mother, however, who spoke up before he did, graciously offering up her son's free time.
Abe had about 18,000 excuses, and around 20,000 ways this could go wrong. But, everytime he tried to open his mouth, someone would speak over him and, before he knew it, Mihashi was out the door and his mother was cooking and Shun was asking to come and Abe was packing a first aid kit.
And, later, was packing a weekend's worth of clothes once Mihashi called him and timidly informed him that he had no way to get back.
It was himself he cursed, then, for always being to busy to teach Mihashi to drive.
But the thought kept on nagging him that no matter what, he would probably end up in this situation anyway.
And so here he was, driving his pitcher to an unknown place for an unknown "meeting" (once Mihashi refused to give details Abe was glad he had come with) in the dead of night.
He quietly pulled over to gather his bearings, because as if he wasn't already stressed out enough about this situation, but now he had just done something unreasonably out of character. He checked up on the sleeping Mihashi about five times before finally relaxing. He sighed, and this time when he layed eyes on Mihashi, it was out of adoration, not worry.
Mihashi's sleeping face had always been described as "kind of weird" or "a little gross" or even "funny". But Abe had always found it quite endearing, the way he snored and drooled a little, the way he always hugged his blanket- not generally considered "cute", but Abe loved all of it. Especially how relaxed he looked- Mihashi had always been jumpy and scatterbrained, but when Mihashi was asleep he always looked so... content.
It was then that it dawned on him, as he watched Mihashi stir a little, exactly why he had taken such a risk to avoid a pothole.
He didn't want to wake Mihashi.
He sighed, looking ahead and thinking about how many holes there would be in the road later. Then he looked back at Mihashi and groaned.
He pulled back out onto the road, avoiding another pothole and wondering why there were taxes at all if the holes in the road weren't ever going to be filled with more cement.
