It was a cold winter day in the town of Bellenau in England, I ran down Barker Lane and approached Serono's Bakery. The store front was always adorned with beautiful decorations such as cartoons of bakers, vibrant illustrations of bread and cake and a sunshine orange painted on the store. Everything about it seemed warm and it wasn't just the bread! I walked inside and called out, " Seronoooo!"
"Ah Caleb, I have your order for Orivan bread right here," said Serono "How's school and your mum?"
I said, " School is fine and mum is fine"
"I'm glad considering how things are at home. Stay well son and may God bless your soul." said Serono.
My mum and I were poor and we lived in a puny , worn out, old house in Maran Lane. We would live off food stamps provided every day by the Government and most days I have all my meals provided by my school's feeding programme. Everyday after school, I would take up jobs ranging from working at my library to yard work for neighbours to make ends meet. My mum would always say with a smile, " Money can never buy what you have Caleb. Never forget that." I would always get so irritated and frustrated because I would think of what she said and just look at our position. It wasn't always like this, my mum was once a big-shot inventor who created a slew of robots for modern day work. She cut labor costs by 20% but tragedy struck us and unfortunately , market prices and demand for robots plummeted. Mum sold every single last invention to buy our house and purchase material to continue my schooling.
I broke down sobbing and disheartened that day. I felt defeated and my mom looked at me and smile and said, " Caleb, in times we fall, but in times we get back and start over with a smile ^-^". From that day, I promised myself to be better than my mother.
