"To infinity! And beyond!" Buzz Lightyear yelled as he smashed the large red button on his left wrist. Buzz's wings snapped out with a loud "Whoosh!" and he flew away from his public space ranger meeting. The cacophony of men, women, and children's voices faded to a dull roar against the howling rhythm of the wind. The space sergeant had just assigned Buzz as the top space ranger in Star Command. As the top space ranger, Buzz now had the privilege to go on his own missions. The mission Buzz had in mind was not particularly relevant to the usual space crime the space rangers dealt with, but he had his own schedule. His old pal Woody, shortly after becoming a space sheriff, had disappeared without a clue. Buzz thought nothing could separate him and his favorite sheriff, yet here he was. Feeling a little stressed about the situation, Buzz glanced at the city below. Cincinnati had never looked so beautiful to him. He noticed his favorite restaurant, Pepe's Mexican Restaurant. He remembered receiving a rather good looking waitress's number on his receipt there. Perks of being a space ranger.
"Star Command to Buzz Lightyear!" a voice called from Buzz's right arm.
"Buzz Lightyear reporting in, what's the problem?"
"We've just received word of your mission, it's been approved by the council. Good luck out there ranger. Continue being a reference for rookies everywhere." The voice was then replaced with static.
"Heh," Buzz thought. He didn't expect his request to go through so quickly and easily. Whether Star Command had approved the mission or recommended something else, Buzz wasn't backing down from this one. Though he had just become the top space ranger, his loyalty first went to Woody. Had he had to leave Star Command, his partner Warp Darkmatter surely would have superseded him as the top space ranger and did as well if not better of a job as Buzz. Having gotten sidetracked by this train of thought, Buzz referred to his map of the city and returned home.
"Welcome home," said a familiar voice from the living room. "You leaving tonight?"
It was Harambe, Buzz's pet and closest pal next to Woody. Harambe was able to communicate with humans using the suit from Star Command Buzz had gotten him.
"Yeah, I am," Buzz responded. "Got it approved faster than I thought was possible."
Harambe wasn't thrilled with Buzz always leaving on his own, especially on this adventure. Buzz planned on going to Uranus to investigate an organization Woody wasn't necessarily on excellent terms with. It was the empire of Snoutopia, a people consisted of purely elephant shrews.
"I'm coming with you whether you like it or not," Harambe stated firmly. "You need someone on this one."
Buzz knew it was no use to argue. To be honest, he wouldn't mind the gorilla's company.
"Very well, I'm going to go through the mail and be off. Be ready by then."
Harambe nodded. Buzz picked the stack of envelopes off the table. Bill, another bill, some questionnaire from a company Buzz had never heard of.
Throwing that out, Buzz pulled out a final letter. It was from his old space ranger school principal, Belethor Goodman. A smile appeared on Buzz's face. The old fart always loved to talk in rhymes.
"You about ready to go?" Harambe asked already slightly opening the door.
"I'm coming."
Buzz tucked the letter into his suit for later.
Taking one last look at his apartment before he walked back outside, Buzz had a strong feeling it would be a while before he could return. Much longer than he would prefer. Without any words, Buzz and Harambe took off into the night together.
